3.1 from bone yard,,need advice

I came across a 90 rs with a 3.1 completely in tact.Junk yard owner swears it runs well.I could not get it started due to dead battery...I'm going back soon and try to start it again.he wants $350 for it.
Please give any advise on things i might check/test/ before wasting $350.
Also, its a u-pick it....can someone please advise on the bare minimum that must be removed/done to pull it.I want to keep it as in tact as possible.
Thanks in advance for any replys.....you guys rock!!

Id find a 3.4 I don't like the 3.1 by design. GM didn't use it for long

No real solid valid reason, it was just GMs beta patch to be able to up the engine numbers till the 3.4 was ready.

Still debating a new long block or crate. It will be a 2.8 or a 3.4

my sick sense of humor wants to keep it a 2.8

Gumby, why don't you like the 3.1 design? Especially compared to the 3.4... it's lower compression, sure, but other than a bigger bore, why don't you like it? Curious

This i s a joke. I posted a reply to the main thread about a v-6 3.1
and i said "go v8 ", that ment if u are going to do a motor swap, why not put in a small block v8. But Toehead is obviously a hot head! I didn't know that i was on a v6 forum(still trying to learn this internet thing), but i can asure u that i know what i'm talking about. I've been diag. and working on cars(gm mostly) 4 18 years, and i have my own succesful shop(fully equipt.) , life and emotions aren't a game, but race me for pinks! LETS PLAY!

Exactly... The question was 'Hey, I want to buy a 3.1 at a junkyard, yard says it runs, but it won't crank up, what should I do?'

"go v8" = troll. In no way does that response help him with his problem.

Um, since you are new to the internet, I'm gonna clue you in on something - nobody cares if you have a shop, have been working on cars for x amount of years, or anything.

It can't be proven or disproven. In a forum such as this, the tone you take in your replies, the way you present yourself, either when correcting someone else, or being corrected by someone else, dictates exactly how you will be percieved by the other members of the forum. Spouting off about your credentials, all the while misspelling the majority of your post, leads me to think you're a 12 year old with your first hardon for your dad's car. Sit back, think on what you are saying, and ask yourself if your post helps this community, or if it's just flame bait.

Swapping in a 3.1 in place of a 2.8 is a matter of pulling it, and putting it right back in.

To swap a small block in, you have to change the mounts, change the transmission, completely rewire the harness if you want to keep fuel injection, or buy a carb + intake, not to mention new springs for the front of your car, and the bigger radiator needed...

You way as well swap in a 20b.

yeah

you could swap in another long block 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 in 6 to 8 hours at a slow pace, compared to the two days a v8 swap would run you with a competent buddy
