An '87 TA could have had any number of ratios and over the years that rear could have been changed out. V8 cars typically came with tall ratios, like 2.73's and 3.08's unless the car was ordered with a posi or lower ratio. Just because it's a T/A does not mean much, my friends '87 T/A came with an LG4 (the 155hp 305) and a 2.73 open rear. That is assuming it is a GM ten bolt, if it was ordered with a performance axle it may be the nine bolt, go to the transmission and drivetrain board and do a search there to find the differences.

My advice is to pull the cover off, and count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears, then divide the number of teeth on the pinion into the number on the ring gear, this will tell you the ratio.
