Check your TPS first.
If you have a manual, there should be a checklist of things to do.

I got the same problem right now. Tranny shifts really late in WOT. It redlines and keeps going.

ROLFLMAO, sorry I meant a Chilton/Haynes manual! Yes there is a checklist in them for testing/adjusting the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).
Sorry about the confusion.

TPS has absolutely nothing to do with your transmission and how it shifts.

The ONLY outside influence on a 700R4 is the TV cable (aka throttle valve cable, kickdown cable, etc), and the TCC lockout switch that goes to the brake pedal.

Fixing TPS won't fix your transmission.

700R4 is totally automatic and the ECM tells it nothing.

How well do you know your tranny's history? Shift kits exist to reprogram the transmission to not go into a higher gear until much later, thus maximizing the amount of time your at high RPM. Could your transmission possibly have a shift kit installed?

The governor on the 700R4 in combination with hydraulic pressure released by the TV cable is what controls at what RPM your transmission shifts at. Its a pretty common problem - you ought to try the transmission boards.

That TV cable doesn't just control when your transmission UPshifts, it also controls its DOWNshift by controlling a passage headed to the governor which will prevent a downshift until later if you have sufficient pedal pressure. Less pedal pressure means a quicker downshift.

Have you adjusted your current TV cable? If its too loose (not pulling tight enough) then the tranny would not think it was at WOT, and not shift.

I'd do TV cable adjust, then TV cable, then governor.

It that fails its rebuild time as the clutches must be worn.

Thanks BOB, TV cable not TPS. Sorry to confuse the two.

Did you check the fluid level at top mark?

Well tonite i coming home from work, i thought id drive the car in Over drive. OMG i think that was my problem the entire time. It goes through every gear, like a hot knife cutting through butter ( i still let of alittle for kicking into third ). Before at a stop sign if i floored it it couldnt even spin the tires but tonite it burnt the entire way through the intersection. Could this be the reason or is it a fluk?

Characteristics of the different shifter positions.

1 - 1st gear only - with engine braking.
2 - 1st and 2nd gear only - with engine braking
D - 1st 2nd and 3rd gear only - with engine braking - TCC engages in 3rd gear.
OD - 1st 2nd 3rd and fourth gear only - no engine braking - TCC engages in 3rd and 4th gears.

Transmission fluid line pressure is generally higher the lower in range you go. (i.e. least pressure in OD, more in D, even more in 2, and most in 1.) This is why when your clutches are worn the car may not move in OD, but it will in D.

I've always found my car more responsive in the lower ranges as I can hold it out longer which gives more torque on the next gear. Odd. I can't explain your poor performance in the other ranges, its contrary to how it ought to work. Is your tranny newly rebuilt?

My 2.8 has never ever spun tires ever, except in the rain. A few times I've chirped em going into 2nd though.

I might just be crazy but man it seemed so much more powerful. it whent to 5 grand on every gear whe i floored it and there was no hesitation. before i floored it and nothing happend " SERIOUSLY ". this past summer i drifted around a stop sign and had smoke pooring of the tires.
