1992 camaro RS 3.1L cold air intake

will a 93 3.4 camaro cold air intake kit fit on my 3.1 92 camaro intake? the only differance in the pic is that the piping goes to the driver side and not passenger side.

Re: 1992 camaro RS 3.1L cold air intake

I would just get a duel snorkel intake. They draw from in front of the radiator and will flow much more than you will need then to. If the intake you are talking about is just a pipe with a cone filter really isn't a CAI. It is still drawing in warm air from under the hood.

thats a true cold air intake, air is sucked in from the outside thats much cooler than air that sucked by the radiator. if you want passenger side intake just make your own, they're not that difficult to make.

What do you mean? Switch that setup to the passenger side instead of driver side? You probably can but that still doesn't make it a true CAI.

i think those silicon couplers can be remove so its possible to make it for a passenger side CAI

firstfirebird will be able to answer where ever he his , i would guess they are the same, since 3.1L and the 3.4L are very similar engines just minor changes

Re: 1992 camaro RS 3.1L cold air intake

the 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4 RWD all used the same intakes IIRC, same basic block too, just larger bore and/or stroke. (the 3.4 got a slightly stronger block because it was pushing the 2.8/3.1 block to bore it out that big) so yes, it should work. but the dual snorkel intake that pulls from infront of the radiator flows more than you'll need on a 3.1 i wish the hood of my bird left clearance for that. (but I'm going turbo any ways....)

This would be the one. Need a piece of pipe to replace the MAF since the 3.1 doesn't use one.

Go look at a local junkyard, there are probably plenty of those for cheap.

Re: 1992 camaro RS 3.1L cold air intake

If you want a WAI, I built one to go where the stock air canister was. and it fit the TB perfect. ( gotta love trial and error) However i'm hopping out of the v6 game and it's just taking space up in the garage. Basically it's PVC pipe with a cone filter, made an awesome sound the IAC never tripped the check engine light(hole is drilled for it) The only con about it is, it needs another good coat of spray paint, If your pooping you hood. Materials cost me about $30 and cone filter cost $35 i'd sell it for $20 plus shipping if your interested.

Re: 1992 camaro RS 3.1L cold air intake

I put the same 2.8 air box on my 3.1 after converting my 87 coupe. I stuck a dead 2.8 MAF between the TB and the airbox to take up the space till I can make something custom.

The 2.8 version of this airbox has the intake air sensor on it - but most ( if not all ) of the V8 style air boxs do not.

I think you're talking about the Incoming Air Tempertature Sensor. Drilling holes for the IAC (Idle Air Control) might not do too much good.

And I'm sure that the intake you're talking about on Ebay can be switched around since they probably don't ship it all allready put together.

To make it a true CAI, just cut a 3" hole next to your smog canister if you've got one(might need to move it around) and get some more 3" piping to go through the panel into the area near the wheel well. Might take some work to get the filter on there though.

That intake in the picture must have a really short filter on it, because I know mine wouldnt fit down in that small space like that.

Re: 1992 camaro RS 3.1L cold air intake

i did have to cut a hole by the smog filter, but the pipeing already goes down to by the weel well so i didnt have to cut any piping. It sounds great too. nnot sure if it added any extra horse power yet (since i'm trying to get my timing fixed) but at least it looks cool and makes it sound like a v8.

You would just put it in place of the PVC pipe that was in the picture that Al Hasse posted.

There off a stock thirdgen. Look arround in junk yards. Thats the best place to pick them up cheep or look in the classifieds here on TGO. They came on camaros with 2.8L's and TPI's pre 1991 IIRC.

They're on Ebay under "Camaro tpi 2.8 air cleaner." Make sure they have both the upper and lower, and that the lower isn't cut open (unless you want it that way). I sold my last one for $70, but I see they're cheaper now.

This looks to be $60 shipped if no further bids.
