Very, Very bad. A friend of mine did that to his neon, ended up spending 2500$ changing motor mounts, tranny fluid, bearings, you name it. Its really not worth it.

try going even higher r.p.m.s , hope you have very deep pockets . you will need them . you will soon trash everything in your drivetrain . no car , repairs cost more than car is worth . sounds like a fun thing thing to do . keep us all posted on how you impress your friends .

let's hope that the car your doing it in isn't your daily driver, otherwise a bus pass would be a good investment

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

hahaha. I remember when I broke a tranny mount - one day I noticed when I started from a dead stop (manual tranny), as I was letting the clutch out, the shifter would rise up like 6 inches lol

This was before I knew anything about my car, so I was just like "Dad, go drive my car and check out what the shifter does. It keeps going up and down."

I've learned SOOOOOO much in the past 2 years thanks to this site, parts cataloges, and stuff on my car breaking

Are you kidding? It is very healthy for the transmission! I myself try to get a few neutral drops in at least twice a day!!! The day just isn't complete without a couple of neutral drops, believe me. While your at, forget 6000 and shoot for 7000-RPM. Between that, and those 50-HP stickers (each), me thinks you'll be in the 9.54 @ 155-mph class....

Just kidding, don't do it!

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

You let your friend drive your car?!!!???!

Only two people (besides the my mechanic) have driven my car. Me...and my dad. And my dad only drove it for 3 miles when i let him see how it drove right after I bought it. And My truck, which I've had since I was 14 (it was my first vehicle and I'm 18 now, I've only had the camaro for a month) my grandpa and dad test drove it when I bought it cuz I didnt have a license. I can count on one hand the times sumone besides me has driven my vehicles. Maybe I'm over protective. But hey, at least I dont have to worry about sumone F***ing up my rigs...unless its me!

Yes it's bad.

Only my wife and I have driven my car. She only has twice, the second time she ran out of gas, and had it towed home, scared I was going to be mad at her for breaking the car. I went in the shed, grabed a gas can, and it fired right up . She won't drive it again unless I'm in the car with her, but I don't know if I'm going to trust her with the kind of power the new engine will be making (shooting for 500hp), espacially not before I get a posi carrier.
----------
EDIT: If you want to do burnouts, just hold the brakes, jab the gas, and slowly let off the breaks until the tire starts spinning - but your still not moving forward. You can burn the tire right off the rim if you leave it in first, and it's a lot safer for your vehicle.

you let a friend drive it ???? i don't think so , you said in your first post that you did it . a real friend would not treat a friends car like that . anyway its a REALLY STUPID thing to do . hope your "friend" has deep pockets .

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

I really was planning to post a message calling you a complete dumbass for even wanting to do something like that, but now I gotta call you a dumbass for letting someone else do that to your car.......dumbass.....although I cant say much cause last night I raced some punks in a Honda and when I shifted it the f'n shifter busted clean off. I won, but damnit now I gotta buy a new shifter. Not much fun drivin around shifting with a 2 inch rod. Had to take off the shifter trim just to shift it to get it home......yeah I feel really smart right about now.

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

I have a feeling he's just using his "friend" as an excuse so he doesn't seem like as big of a dumbass.

Really though, it's terrible for the car. You're lucky if you just broke the mount. We used to do it occasionally in Driver's Ed (Letting three pairs of 15-16 year olds drive three Cavaliers around while the teacher was with the rest of the class in a portable probably wasn't the best idea) but we wouldn't go anywhere near 6 grand.

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

A friend of mine wanted to try burn the wheels with his dads 80's Nissan Laurel http://www.finn.no/finn/car/object?f...dcbRHpGO470118

But , the 2.4 V6 wasnt powerful enough, so he tried the dropshift. Well that still didnt work.

2 weeks later or so, hi's dad had a non functional tranny. Car was worth $5500, and the tranny cost about $6000.

What happened was that family didnt have a car, dad took train to work, kids didnt have a car to lend. Mom was pissed.

It's not really necessery at all on a thirdgen, as even the 2.8 will smoke the tires if you follow the directions above. You cant play "stickshift" and the way those can drop the clutch. Although it's not healthy for the stickshift clutch either, it's FAR cheaper to replace, at an average of $200 for all my 5 clutch swaps on different cars.

Just say no. Dont dropshift.

EDIT
My gut feeling about this in general, is that you should only ever try anything like this if your certain the tires will actually spin. If they dont, all that force has to go somewhere, and thats why trannies and cluthes get busted. If it's on nice wet pavement, and you spin instantly, it's not such a impact on the drivetrain. But not advisable in any case.

You gotta be kidding me! The synopsis under the video states that it was too much power for her? Heh, did she ever hear of simply letting go of the gas, not to mention that other wonderful little stopping gizmo... you know, some people usually refer to it as THE BRAKE PEDAL!

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

LOl... that woman had trouble from the getgo... probably wasnt used to sticks at all. Most who arent, would just stall the car over and over, just that in this case, it spun the tires instead. I'd stop her before she was even done backing up. It was truly evident, she did NOT have control over that car, at all.

But most women dont. I'd want to see some skilled driving before I'd let a woman drive a car like that.

Btw, same thing happened when my old gf was training to get her drivers licence. We trained with a 100hp vw alot, occationly driving the formula. When we did, she would make it go sideways out of the greenlight. Not on purpose, but lack of control. Even with full financing from the family, and 2 years trying, the Dumbass never got a licence, so I ditched her and got another gf.

I need a driving gf to help tow those project cars home, dammit.

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

I was just kidding, my wife isn't THAT idiotic!!! She actually drove a 4th gen LS1 for a while, and her grandfather had to show her what the car really could do

I bought my wife a BMW for our anneversary, stick, and it will get sideways quick. She came home one day, she just about craped her pants comming around a corner and downshifting. Told me this the next day of course. I actually just bought a new fender for it yesterday because she was backing out of a parking garage, and hit the pole - I don't understand how, because she has been driving the Navigator (with 18x11" rims and 31.5" tires) for two years and never hit anything, but send her to work in a 325 and...

That woman in the video reminds me of the way guys will jump on a powerful dirtbike and crank the throttle, and flip over backwards (except that was a much more expensive wreck).

I did that once. I was 12 or 13 and I jumped on my friends YZ125. I had a small 4-stroke 125 at the time, and I cracked the throttle as if I were on it. When I hit the power-band it stood straight up. I didn't flip completely backwards, but it scared the hell out of me.

Re: dropshifting??? is it bad???

drop shifting is bad... very bad. right after i fixed the motor on my car, i did it... i broke the tranny mount and 2 bolts off of the exhaust that connected the cat to the other pipe behind it... needless to say... i was at the muffler shop paying some cash, but not too much. it was only $40 for the labor, $20 for the mount, and i had them replace my o2 sensor while i was under there too so it worked out pretty good... but be warned... this is NOT GOOD. just stick it in first, hold the brake, and make a smoke cloud. i can do 2nd gear and catch third that way
