Ok just got to my grand parents house and there is a rattaling sound comming from the engine. Drove 200+ miles and need to drive back home on sunday. Sound is loud and crazy kinda like a coin in a can. I just hope it is not a droped valve that would **** me off. Maybe a push rod or rocker arm. I need to know help me out here. Oh and sorry about the way I write hella tired. Thanx for the help.

Have you checked your oil?

 

Oil is good sounds like a push rod how hard is that to replace and how much for the parts. I have a 2.8 any help is good help.

 

First you need to figure out which side.

Then is it rocker, pushrod, lifter, or flattened cam(has been happening alot lately due to new oil forumlas).

 

The sound is comming from the driver side

 

Get a piece of tube and try to isolate exactly where it's coming from.

 

I had a Buick Park Avenue, that suddenly developed a low end knock. Long story short it wasn't a knock it was the crank pulley at the bottom of the engine. It has a rubber inside that is made to wear out. $200 part and I was back on the road.

 

Does the noise change at all? Like with rpm or as it heats up or anything?

 

The problem with the crank pulley is for the 3.8 or 3.3 only. The 2.8 and the 3.1 do not have that problem. as for the noise 2.8 are notorious for top end problems so you probably broke a rocker or or push rod. It could also be the flywheel or a bad wristpin. The wristpin connects the connecting rod to the piston. It's hard to diagnose without actually hearing it our self. If you can give us more info on how loud or if it changes when you rev it or going down the road.

 

The cam lobe problem is for flat tappet cams not roller cams and the 2.8 in 88 is a roller.

 

In a v8 it is. A 2.8 in RWD camaro is still a flat tappet. 60deg engines didnt get roller cams tell the 3rd gen design(FWD only, like 99+ models)

You need to pull the valve cover, and stop all of this speculation because it'll only make you even more anxious. I don't see how it could possibly be a bent pushrod, unless you were revving the snot out of it on your way to your grandparent's house. Were you? It's possible the pushrod slipped from out of it's position, but you would hear this when RPM is increased (in reference to a bad air/fuel mixture)....

 

My lifters were noisy, so I put a can of Risloan in. Went away for good.

 

Do you mean the harmonic balancer? The elastometer is rubber and wears eventually.

 

The harmonic balancer/crank pulley to be exact. Again not a 2.8 or 3.1 issue.
