1992 Camaro RS 3.1 liter idle question

My 3.1 seems to run great on the road but every time i stop it dies and it will barely stay idle when started but runs great on the highway. Does anyone know a cure for this symptom. thanks

Sounds like a problem with your IAC sensor or a vacuum problem.

i had this problem, had everything apart and couldnt work it out, in the end it was inproper gaped sparkplugs. the engines real sensitive to it. ran great afterwards.

The TPS could give you an erratic idle as well. Check the computer and see if there are any codes.

Re: 1992 Camaro RS 3.1 liter idle question

I would pull codes first like the rest of you are suggesting?.if none it could be either a vacuum leak or fuel problem. The brake booster and cannister purge solenoid was a problem on mine. The booster is an easy check..plug the line and see how it runs, if it idles like it should?then there you go.Unplug the line going to the top of the solenoid on the charcoal cannister and see if you can blow through it or it will hold vacuum. If you can blow through the solenoid with engine off or it wont hold vacuum its junk. Those two items are the mains one to check first.Check fuel pressure and if its within specs then the regulator and pump isnt a problem and lastly remove top plenum and ohm the injectors. If they are not 12+-2 ohms or lower they need to get out of there. The lower the reading the more fuel being dumped into that cylinder?Which makes a good freeway injector but not a stop and go injector idles rough/surging etc. If you find you need injectors look at the thread itch your stock injectors" good luck

sounds like either your timing chain is loose, or the spark plugs, or a vaccum problem.

Re: 1992 Camaro RS 3.1 liter idle question

I don't think you would get any engine codes unless the check engine light is actually on, if it is, definetly check the codes first, its probally a OBD1 system, so you will need a piece of wire or something to make a jumper out of, and fault the diagnostics box, but like the other guys are saying it could be a large number of things as to why your car fails to keep a smooth idle...

A few suggestions they've mentioned, is check fuel pressure and the fuel filter, if its dirty, just change it, could be causing blockage to the injectors.

I'm not sure what year or injection style you have, but it could also be possible that you're throttle body or fuel rail itself is going dirty, my car has a air intake temp sensor, on the air box for the air filter, if thats not reading properly, it can cause a rough or high idle, just a few things to look into =)

Good luck!

Re: 1992 Camaro RS 3.1 liter idle question

I had the same issue only to a higher degree. Could barely get it to start and stay runnin'. Found the prob to be a Vacuum leak at the Throttle Body where the two vac line plug into the triangle shaped grommet. It's kind of rigged up now and has been runnin' better but I sure it needs to be replaced. Called a couple of parts stores and they don't have one-does anyone know where a guy could get one? BTW I was having some shifting problems too (didn't want to shift until it warmed up) and after I replaced all the brittle vac hoses and rigged up the grommet thing my shifting prob was taken care of too.
