Re: ease of fuel pump change?

Drop the rear, drop the tank, pull pump from top of tank, replace, put it all back together.

Or, if you're brave, cut an access panel. Several people have done it. A good search on replacing the fuel pump will likely net you talk about it.

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

If your car has alot of underside rust, it will be a pain, but doable.

The first time I did mine it was by myself and took a whole day.

After 4 times of dropping the tank, I can get it done in a few hours.

few tips:
Main thing, MAIN THING. remove as much gas outta that sob as you can.
It has to twist to come out, n go in.
make sure the gas cap is off before you undo the fuel lines or vent.
jack the car up as high in the rear as you can possibly get it.

Make sure its not a plugged line, filter, or bad relay first.

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

I replaced mine a few months back. I did the acess panel method as I only had time to have the car down for a day. Also a pointer is to make sure that the parts store gives you the right wiring harness if you buy a new one. They gave me the wrong one so I had to reattach the old one after I cut it all off. Make sure that the pump also turns on before you put it all back together.

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

an 88 2.8L fuel pump replacement i did a few years ago:

tanks on these are in a bad position and crammed up into the rear of the car

a PITA but you just have to manhandle wrestle it out

dont be a wuss with it,
do what you have to to yank the tank out, it will fight you

and the filler neck is solid one piece

unlike most other vehicles, except rear license plate fill ones

but those tanks are simple as hell to drop

good luck

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

WATCH THE BRAKE LINE when you drop the rear end. !

It will be stretched and could brake if your not carrefull when dropping the rear end. Many times I will unbolt the hard line-to-rubber line body mounting bracket to gain a little extra play so the brake lines remain intact and don't break when dropping the rear end.

My first one only took me about 6 hours and I dropped the tank. You weren't running the pump dry were you? That will burn it up.

I only turned the key on for a split second to make sure the pump worked before I put it back into the tank. I had to put the stock wiring back on to make sure it still worked since I cut it off.

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

well its not structural but youll have to cut the fuel lines because they are longer than the fuel tank and are solid and youll have to pull carpeting and then have a hole to patch

IMHO its not worth it

i would only ever do it correctly

do a little each day if you need to

sometimes you have to remove the exhaust pipe

be better to take more time and do it right than hack the car

drive something else for a few days

drop the rear end ? huh ?

you dont have to drop the rear end

good luck

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

Had to replace my tank zs&tas a few (4) years ago wasn't too bad a job to do just take your time and replace and paint anything as you go. I changed the pump seeing how I'd got the tank out and it might be a good idea for you to change the tank if you're at all worried about it's integrity and of course if your gonna keep the car. I don't use my car in winter, I don't want any of that salt on my car. (Sheffield city council use WAY too much!) But anyway, I wouldn't cut my floor up though it don't seem right to do that, but thats just me.

Re: ease of fuel pump change?

I would have done it the right way but I needed the car running the next day, so I only had about a day to work on the car and didn't want to risk having it in pieces.

amen to that, wish people could just learn to drive rather than rely on salt !
