Re: auto to manual
So much work that it's cheaper AND easier to sell your car and buy a 5 speed V8 car to swap your 400 in to.
The difference:
Engine, transmission, crossmember, pedals, linkage/hydraulics, speedometer drive, neutral start/clutch start switch, transmission tunnel shifter hole, shifter, console shifter plate/boot
This also doesn't take into account ECM, but you're probably not doing that anyway. It's best if you buy a complete change over kit. The last one I bought from this site for 600 bucks. I have a V6 car but it's going V8.

you need to replace the flexplate and torque converter with a clutch and flywheel, bolt the manual trans up, cut the shifter hole <<go to the junkyard and bring a piece of cardboard and a sharpie and trace the hole.
and a few other basic things. it's not too bad :]

Maybe ignorance is spreading around!
He is going V6 to V8, as well as auto to std. I doubt you've done that in a third gen or you wouldn't be taling about how easy it is!
There is absolutely nothing re-usable in this swap. If he starts with a V8 car, he can do the swap as you describe.
There's nothing horrible about what I think. I have the benefit of experience on my side, WITH THESE CARS IN PARTICULAR. I have done this, going from 4 cyl to V8, and it takes a lot of time unless it's a hack job.

I've done v6-v8 swaps in f-bodys.
i've also done auto - manual swaps in f-bodys.
it takes time. EVERYTHING does.
So a combination of the two isnt difficult if you've done it before.
so dont automatically think because i'm new to this forum i have no idea what i'm talking about.
Re: auto to manual

To Boostin'xr4:
Ditto the been there done that. That's why you shouldn't start off flaming me. I also have the benefit of much experience and many unorthodox engine swaps.
You could just offer your advice instead of taking a swipe at me accross digital space. THAT'S what shows you're new to the forum; bench racing and fixing cars in cyberspace are very different than taking your time in a garage. Some people can't afford that time and it translates into difficult.
It's not difficult to build a skyscraper, but it takes time and money that most people don't want to dedicate...

Re: auto to manual
First, Im not 100% but, the tranny bolt pattern on the 2.8 should be different that the bolt pattern on a 6.6.
Second, even if you made an adapter plate, the 2.8 tranny probubly wont be able to handle the power of a 6.6.
If you are going to spend a couple years to make something like this, do it right. Dont cut corners, especially on somthing as important as your transmission. Good luck with your project.

There are 2 things wrong with this idea...keeping you tranny.
