split decision

I have an 89 2.8. I'm lookin' to be different. I figured, gettin' the GMMG exhaust or the TSP Rumbler would be the best way to do that. Just wondering what modifications I would have to do for either one? I'm gettin' the pacesetter headers and y-pipe soon. Should I get the ceramic coated or painted? The Pacesetters dont work with the smog pump. I want to remove it. Does anyone know if the smog delete pully will fit the 2.8 or is it just for the V8s or should I just run my belt a different way? Also, after the pacesetters, what should I do about a highflow cat (in/out) and then from there back into the GMMG or TSP? I'm not lookin' to sound like a V8 or anything, cause I know I wont. Just wanna be different. And someone told me to cut the dynomax bullet out of the TSP and put a classic chambered muffler in there instead. Why would I do that? That is if I went with the TSP. I hoping you guys can help me out. I really like the GMMG, but quite expensive. If you guys lean more torwards the GMMG and have one for sale for cheap or know where I can get one for cheap, definitely let me know. Thanks guys.

Re: split decision

Get the coated headers unless your cheap like me and get the painted. Coated will last longer and look better longer. Just get a 2.5" Magnaflow cat off ebay. I didn't know that the 2.8s had a smog pump. To my knowledge mine didn't but has a pulley where it should be but the parts store sells belts that are short enough to bypass it. The TSP exhaust is really loud and raspy, I would go GMMG just to see how it sounds.

There is a vid floating around here of a guy who has one of those chambered mufflers and a resonator of some sort, sounds pretty good.

The end of the pacesetter y-pipe is 2.25". So should I get a 2.25" inlet with a 2.5" outlet or 2.5" all the way through? Also, the i-pipe for both systems are 3". How would I go about connecting them to the 2.5" cat? Also, do you know where I can get the GMMG system for cheap? It's quite expensive directly from GMMG. I love their slash tips though. Please get back to me ASAP. I appreciate your help so far.

Re: split decision

Just get a 2.5" pipe made. Any exhaust shop should be able to do it. 3" is too big for our motors. I'm not sure if they make a 2.25" in/2.5" out high flow cat. If not then any shop can easily adapt a 2.5" in/out cat to the exhaust. I don't know where you can get the GMMG exhaust for cheap, just keep your eyes open for a used system. The GMMG exhaust is just pretty much the muffler and tail pipes and the TSP rumbler is pretty much just a bullet/glasspack type muffler that you could jsut buy anywhere. If you want to go chambered like the GMMG exhaust then look up stainless works exhaust and classic chambered exhaust. They make longer chambered type mufflers that can take the place of part of the I-pipe.

Used GMMG:

Thanks so much. Quick question. Since the used system doesnt have an i-pipe I could have a 2.5" made all the way back til it gets to the mufflers and just have then expand the pipe at the end. Sound good?

A muffler shop with a good exhaust guy can make you anything for exhaust.

Nice. Think that's what I'll do. I'll definitely post a clip of how it sounds with everything too when it's all done. Also, I know your car didnt come with the smog pump, but do you know if the delete pulley will fit? I'd like to keep the stock belt size. Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Re: split decision

Just going to throw my opinion in here...I would go with headers//high flow cat//dynomax cat-back. I havent heard one of these v6s that actually sounded semi-decent with a glasspack or bullet style muffler. Now on v8s...you can run straight headers and it would sound awsome.
Its your car though...do what you want to do. Im just thowing my opinion into the mix.

All opinions are appreciated. I've seen a lot of people with the dynomax catback. I'm just trying to be different. If everything ends up sounding like ****, I'll prolly go with what everyone else is doing. Just trying to be different. Who I am.

Understandable, just don't go SLP loudmouth. Sounds horrible. When you take off your smog pump and go get another belt the shop will ask you if you have a smog pump or not, since you won't then they will give you a belt short enough.

Its all a matter of preference. It may be because we're mostly American and prefer the low V8 rumble to higher pitched and raspyness.

Thanks so much for all your help. I'll let you know how everything sounds when it's done. Hopefully by the end of march, early April it'll all be done. I ordered a new headliner, sunvisors, and sail panels. so I'll prolly be puttin all those in first. But thank you again.

Re: split decision

Got bad news everyone. Turns out I wont be gettin any new exhaust right now. Let alone the gmmg. Got some financial issues to work out first. Definitely sucks. I was so excited on gettin everything and being to first to do something different. (as far as I know) Hopefully I'll still be the first to do it, but I'm sure someone will beat me to it now. Lol. Oh well.
