How much difference does a K&N Really make?
Hey guys, K&N air filters were on sale at Canadian Tire today.. 44$ CAD (I paid with American and it was only $0.95 to the strong Canadian dollar, Just had to add that) I was just wondering, since I added it up, and if I had the car long enough, it would actually turn out cheaper to just buy the K&N, than to keep buying the crappy paper filters which last 4 months at best, for 10$ each. So does it make a difference in power, or does it just say that on the package for advertising?

Board member "blue89RS" did a test a few years ago. IIRC, clean for clean, they flow the same. Dirty for Dirty, the K&n flowed better. But who keeps dirty filters in the car?
Also, since you are MAF controlled. Some people have problems with the oil off the K&N blowing onto the maf and giving false readings. I will say that I am one of them, and have pulled my oiled(not KN though) filters out and put papers in.

My last K&N filter gained me 1.5 mpg on average. I don't care what dollars you buy your gas with, less is better.
I have had that MAF problem, but if you clean off the maf with spray fuel injection cleaner (like carburetor cleaner) it goes away. It sometimes comes back after you re-oil the element but you just clean it again. I will never run a paper filter again.
And, the first time I had that MAF problem was with a vortec 350 in a truck. The engine light came on, but the mileage was still better and it didn't run bad. The dealer, of course, said to go back to paper but screw that! After cleaning and running for a while the light went away. The mileage improved...
That's what mattered!
