Anybody driven a 2.8 + T5 down the 1/4 mi?

What did it run?

I took mine down just for giggles, the best it went was 18.2 @ 75. I stopped making passes and switched to the camaro when I got walked by an old taurus.

I knew it was slow, but is it supposed to be that slow? It's all stock with some unknown muffler.

1986 2.8L firebird. T-5. 3.23:1 17.4 @ 76MPH.

i think i might be able to knock that down a bit. i just recently discovered "power shifting". it feels faster  and i am not on an old tired clutch anymore.

I dont think so I had 3.73's and 1 & 2 was to low couldn't get enough speed out of them. Now back to stock 3.42's and fixing to go 3.23's. It will make it a little lower in 1st about the same in 2nd but a little higher in 3rd than a v8 5speed with 3.73's. I believe it may run a little faster, will find out. One thing I know for sure is I was slower with 3.73 than 3.42 out street racing (4 cars).

cant you put a V8 head on the duke ? wonder what the motor weighs compared to v6's ? sounds interesting

anyhows power shifting or flat changing as we call it over here is basically changing gear **** fast with out lifting off the throttle. carefull though if the box aint up to it and you cant bash through the gears youl end up over reving the motor ........

lol ive heard that 2 but **** id turbo it just bone stock for the hell of it. i mean that motor theres just so much dam room, and it would be easy as hell to build a single header.

header 50$'s
used holset hx35 75$'s
hell even a t3
ebay inter cooler off a starion or volvo 20$'s
100 plumbing kit
though u would have to do something with the carb (draw threw carb setup) or swap to efi, worst case is a swap to efi which would run about 500
could be a neat lil toy

hahaha, i would deffinitely put an aluminum head on one. freaking iron dukes!!! not all iron anymore!!! who bought a 4 cyl 3rd gen new anyways?! didn't they only make about 1500 a year?
how many of the people that took their v6's to the track had all their emissions? i hope mine is at least faster than my cavalier.

Re: Anybody driven a 2.8 + T5 down the 1/4 mi?

well, as you can see in this dyno graph comparing my 2.8L car to my 5.7L car. my 2.8s HP and TQ start to dip at around 4k. peak TQ is hit at 3k-4k with peak HP hit at 4k and maintaining flat until i let off on the dyno at around 5300. ideally i should shift at whatever RPM would cause me to drop down to 4K when i shifted, this would be about 5300 RPM.. i don't however. this engine does not sound good that high and i just don't do that. i usually shift around 4500. so there is room for improvement in those quarter mile times. i just don't want to spin this thing to pieces, it's my daily driver.

mods to reach these HP numbers are minimal:
170K mile engine
removed that crazy factory intake in favor of 3" pipe and K&N.
well maintained ignition system.
AIR delete.

car is factory no AC.

click the attached for a view of this that is not resized, and is actually legible.

Re: Anybody driven a 2.8 + T5 down the 1/4 mi?

sad, my cavalier is rated at about 125hp. performance is going to be a decisive factor on weather i keep my camaro or sell it and keep my cavalier. i'm not worried about the chassis, i know its awesome, but the engine just doesn't sound like a winner. so i'll be paying close attention to this thread.

I haven't ran mine down an official 1/4 mi., but I have done it on the street and got 16.8 but don't know the speed. It's an auto too.

keep in mind that is FLYWHEEL horse power. the 86 2.8 is rated at 135HP at the flywheel. if 135 flywheel produces 120 at the wheels with a few tiny modifications... then your "rated 115hp" cavalier will be lucky to break 100 at the wheels on a dyno. besides it's front wheel drive.

of course this all also depends on the integrity of the dyno. i was on a mustang dyno with this same v6 and was handed "proof" that my car had 140HP at the wheels, and 180 at the flywheel. all this from an intake and an AIR delete. i don't think so.
