3.1 Engine issues

3.1 Engine issues
I have a 90 Camaro RS, 3.1L ,Auto, 110K miles, stock. The car has been parked for a few years but I would like to run it again because it gets better mpg than my truck. The problem is the last time I was running it the car was eating coolant and would randomly overheat and sometimes stall (when warmed up) at stops. I assume I need some new gaskets on the engine maybe head or intake but am not sure. The radiator is like new so maybe the thermostat is to blame for the overheating??? And I don't know what is causing it to die at stops. (I have a code reader but the engine light usually isn't on) Any info would help. Thanks.

Re: 3.1 Engine issues
the 3.1 need to relearn the idle if the battery dies or is diosconected, this takes x amount of time and stalling at stops/lights is common.
as far as the coolant is it smoking out the ex system, does it smell like maple syrup.
is the motor oil milky?

I can tell ya that our lovely intake gaskets suck..even on the 3100 FWD they leak on those.Mine is leaking slightly have to fill the overflow every month. If your car usually dies while braking or at a light.A bad brake booster, vacuum leak,or an injector going bad comes to mind.Have to do some checking on your end.

Mine is burning it,ever so slightly..the FWD I seen get mixed with coolant more often then the RWD.possibly the design of the manifold. Its not very hard to replace the gasket..just take your time and pay attention while u tear it apart.I think you will have to remove the push rods in order to get the gasket on...the push rods sit in front of the gasket if I recall.I havent done mine yet..so I cannot give you details yet.
