I suggest looking into the egr valve. Doesn't take too much time. lotsa info in
92 3.1 EGR Problems @ 9 mpg Code 32 on my and a few others EGR problems.
At the worst point, I was driving with a feather-light foot and still got a constant 9mpg or worse. It was a line from the egr to the intake.
Its worth a look. Do you have any codes?

if the plugs are white that means the car is running dead lean,do u mean the insulator is white,or is the entire end of the plug white?

right guys thanks for looking, ive fitted new plugs (champion) gapped at .045 - the ones i removed were at .035 (ngk's) the insulator and tips were white though curiously round the outer edge was rather black
ive blocked off the egr
ive played with that bliming charcoal canister
i had a trundle up the road and theres a hell of a lot more power below 2k and higher up now, im guna read codes tmrw, and use it and monitor mpg
i cant smell gas anywheres so im hope-ing theres no leaks
ill update later

NGK plugs run really hot, try using AC Delco, they're like $1 a piece and they run perfect for our cars. They'll run half as hot.
