Hi,


I have a problem with my '91 Firebird, it has a 3.1 v6 engine.

Never had any problem until this evening.
I would start it but I got this experience:

First attempt to start failed, the engine started up and immediately it stopped.
I tried a 2nd time to start. The engine runs but it begin to pulsate between 1000 and 2000 rpm, every 2 seconds the engine goes to 2000rpm and then slow down to 1000 rpm, this repaets continuously.

Has it something to do with the IAC?

The car sleeps outside and isn't used a lot ( it stood still during 1 week ).

Anybody an idea?

probably going to need some more info before you get some opinions?.like any check engine light on?.have you tested fuel pressure?..have you recently did any electrical work where you disconnected the battery?..etc..

The problem has been solved!!

It was the big vacuum hose which is connected to the brake servo unit that was pulled off, probably done by a cat who slept under the hood. I found also a lot of cat hair under the hood.

Reconnecting the hose gave a normal running engine.

There was no SES light coming on during the problem.

ya my cat usually sleeps in my engine,.,..so does my dog, thats why i have a v6, so theres some extra room in there

 

Pack Rats are some of the biggest electrical issues here..my car came from Cali and a pack rat tried to build a house under the intake almost eating through two injector harnesses and ate some wiring near the firewall.They bring in leaves..pinecones and start chompin on wiring like it was a buffet line.I had the opportunity to see one while I was doing a battery and caught him taking off into the engine somewhere and seen him on top of the plenum and I grabbed my air nozzle with an extension and blew the **** out of him..he was hanging on for dear life until he dropped to the ground and ran like hell...fast little bastards.Some dont make it out in time and then you smell dead rat as you cruise down the road.

That's the negative about the V6, there's a lot of space free to move under the hood. I suppose they like it because it's out of the rain and wind.

The Bird is a sunday car, so during the week the car isn't moving and it will be very quiet over there.

If you have an idea how to prevent making a cat-hotel, let me hear it... .

Pee on and around your car or driveway, no really. Animals know where to go or not by marked terority. They have no clue that is your car if they don't smell it. Pee in a milk jug and spread it around.

I pee in front of my shed to keep the cats out.
