Freeze Plugs

Yes, i have searched for this but was unable to find anything.
I seen a picture floating here somewhere on the 3.1 engine.

I currently have an 89 firebird that sat for about 10 years. I finally started it up but i have antifreeze burning off under the exhaust manifolds after about minute of running. Im very sure its my freeze plugs, but my question is has anyone tried changing the freeze plugs with engine still in car? I know 3 i think? are behind engine and transmission will need to be removed, but i was just wanting to change the left and right ones under the exhaust manifolds. I havent even seen these freeze plugs on my engine yet so i dont know. I was wondering if they are welded in?
