running too high

My neighbor has a 92 RS Camaro with the V6 engine. The symptoms of the problem are:

1.After cranking, the tach sits between 2000-2500 rpm, it has started and sat as high as 3000rpm before, which is way too high to be sitting still.

2. It has no power when being driven, the transmission shifts at points that are way too high on the tach, at times close to the end of the tach band, which is close to 7000 rpm's.

3. It also wants to quit when you are coming up to a stopping point. It cranks right back up, but wants to quit when you stop.

The air filter is clean, and I checked all the spark plug wires, they are all firing. I was wondering if anyone knew what might be going wrong.

Re: running too high

Honestly, it sounds like a humongous vacuum leak!!

Check all hoses, sounds like you popped a big one...

Good luck

You may also check the sensor connections, take them off and make sure they are not corroded inside and also they are connected to the sensor. I just went through the coolant sensor was corroded and the car was all over the place and after installing the sensor all the problems went away.

Re: running too high

Thanks I will check the hoses again. I found a few that connect to the charcoal cannister and run to the air intake area that were worn, but I didnt think that they would be enough to cause the problem as I just replaced the same ones on my 91 z28, but it didnt have the same problem. I will replace them and check the others again. Thanks again.

thanks, I will definitely check the sensors.

Re: running too high

Don't take the tachometer readings as the actual engine speed. All '90-92 3.1's have wildly high reading tachs. The problem is with a resistor in the instument consul. Max. power of the 3.1 is only at 4400 rpm. So any readings higher than about 5500 are false. Does sound like you have some issues though. Look at the error codes that get displayed with the Service Engine Soon light.
