Along with the year of the car...
But it sounds like one of your parking brake cables is hanging loose (that's about the only braided steel wire under there), and the four-wire connector is possibly your transmission case connector. However, without a pic of said connector, we can't tell you.

Well, is the four-wire thing inline (OOOO) or square? If the braided wire isn't a park brake cable, then it sounds like someone used the wire to possibly hold something up under there and it broke. Unless, of course, you are talking about a Camaro, which, in 87, used a steel braided speedo drive cable. Does your speedo work?
:edit: Also, if you can, can you tell me the colors of the wires in the four-wire connector? I have an 87 factory manual and can look the thing up for you, provided I have wire colors to work with.

I wonder if the square plug goes into the tranny...I believe when I took out my engine there was a square plug in the tranny. Ill go and take a pic and upload it real quick.
Does it look like it might plug into this?
