Back to stock??

Yep, for the time being. My Camaro has been parked for a couple of years now after the last round of motor problems I had with it. Finally.......I'm planning to get it back on the road, soon! For now, I'm planning to pick up a stock 3.1 to drop back in it. I do still plan to build the turbo 3.4 sometime...just not quite sure when that will be. I hate the fact that paint doesn't stay in great condition when ignored... The pearl paint isn't nearly as nice as it was before I parked the car but we'll get it all straightened back out! Anyway, those of you who know me, I'll probably be back on here more in the future!

Welcome back. Haven't seen you on here in a while...I cant remember, what problem did you have with the engine? Didn't you have most of the turbo 3.4 already mocked up?

Good to see ya. I've been reading up on turbo builds for a while and you posted a lot back in the day (redraif is another that was in most of the threads & hasn't been around lately either...).
If you happen to not need any go fast goodies, let us know.

Re: Back to stock??

The n/a 3.1 that I've been running I think has a busted piston or broken rings or something. I cracked the rings lands on a piston in it once before. I replaced that piston and probably should have been smart enough to replace all of them. Hind sight is always 20/20, huh? I debated on fixing this motor. I think it'll be cheaper and easier to throw a stock motor back in it for now, though. I found one locally for $200. I'll probably fix this motor sometime and may sell it at that point. But, that could be a while. I got married and have a house now so, the Camaro won't be as high up on the priority list as it once was!
As far as the 3.4 turbo stuff... yeah, I have built the headers and y-pipe, have a turbo and WG, have the pistons and cam and block. I started building the intake manifold and need to complete it. I don't know that I ever spilled the beans on the plans there... just think aluminum heads and a distributor...

Re: Back to stock??

Hey man its good to see you have made it back here. Ive read alot of your old posts about turbo set ups....quick question for you man...when you get that 3.1l in there can you see if you can get tunerpro to connect to your computer running the $88 mask. Ive been having so much trouble getting it all to work. Ive had everyone helping me, from Rob Saar(creator of the .ads), Mark Mansur, FirstFirbird, and so on. Just figured knowing how you like to modify you will most likely want to at least tune it to get the best out of it...if you dont mind PM me or something....either way its nice to see you are back. Good luck with the swap....and of course let us know if your selling any go fast goodies! PM me with those also lol!

You COULD run a distributor but it means major modifications to the intake. Pretty much you would have to run a fully custom made one or try and modify the one you have. For example you could make a sheetmetal intake(project89 made one but it was for iron heads)

Re: Back to stock??

as mtwlkn said, running aluminum heads and a distributor requires lots of modification. I am building a whole new manifold, from the heads to the plenum. I don't have any pics of it yet. Once I actually make progress/get it done, I'll post them here and/or my website.
I have done some tuning on my car. I am running the $88 mask. Its been a while since i've messed with it (obviously, since car has been parked) so I'm a little rusty on all of it, well the little bit that I had figured out. Just to post here...for general viewing (feel free to PM me still if you want)......
I am using $88 -2.xdf file in tuner pro rt. I can email you that file if you'd like. It worked great for me. I did many datalogs. Also, I bought the ostrich so that I can "tune on the fly". It was pretty cool/funny to have a friend of mine who owns an IT company get in my car with me one day, look down, and say "is that a USB cable in your car (coming from under the dash)??" Anyway, no burning chips, hook up the aldl cable and plug in the usb for the ostrich and log, tune, log, tune... HIGHLY recommended! If you figure out some of the tuning, you may be able to help me, too!

Re: Back to stock??

I would LOVE to start tuning my car but i cant get my laptop to connect to it....like i said ive worked with the top people on this and we cant figure it out....im at the point now that i need to just try another laptop and or car to see if its just my car or the laptop...laptop is pretty new tho and everything has been gone through with a fine comb but computer people and there is no reason it shouldnt connect...once i do get connection i will buy the ostrich and start tuning...i have never even gotten to look at my values yet cause i cant get a connection

once i do i will try and help you lol....youll prolly be more help to me tho....i plan to pull the motor this winter and go through everything...did you run 1.6 rockers on your car, cause im wondering if those will clear the vavle covers or not....i was looking at getting the spectra? or edelbrock chrome ones but didnt know if they were going to be high enough to clear the extra lift. My main goal right now is to get the most out of the 3.1 as possible and do a full tune then switch to the $8D and do a turbo set up...the $8d and that new release of it coming out looks very promising...check out the diy prom section on that new post about it....its got the provisions for water/methonal injecton in it and everything...its a great mask!...IF I COULD EVER GET MY LAPTOP TO CONNECT WITH MY CAR i will be ready to have some fun!

Re: Back to stock??

I have the edlebrock chrome valve covers on my motor. I've heard 1.6s won't clear stock covers but I never tried. I haven't looked yet to see if you have your email listed or not. If not, PM it to me and I'll email you this .xdf file I've been using.
wait...just looked... I forgot, .xdf is for tuning. the .ads file I am using is 1227730_V6_90-92.ads I can still email you the exact file I have if you want to try it.

The Fiero guys run 1.6 rr and they have pretty much the same engine. Their valve covers are different, but I thought that was just looks......

i never completly finished it but i did get a lil further then the pics, the plenum sat ontop of the runners basically sorta a halfround plenum

it was a gen 2 intake, if u weld and machine the ports on a gen 2 intake u can get them to match the gen 3 ports

Glad to see you back Alan. I started having problems with my 3.4. Ended up finding a V8 vert, so thats what I have now. But still check the v6 board and try to help along.

Alan, funny how we all fell away around the same time. I hate I never got my car back to track to see what we could pull out of it with all the new stuff. I might could have matched up with you. Did you ever get yours to the dyno to see what numbers you were pulling? I know the tranny was giving you issues.

Well I guess we have similar stories to explain the absence... I got married and have a house too... LOL. Bird has been sitting since 06...

My reason for parking was a bad head that turned into a overhauling nightmare... Was to be a big build up and test trial of the new extra ported heads with a new chip and air fuel tune... I said we should do that first and do the rest in stages, keeping the car running during it all. But it did not go down that way...

The plan fell flat on its face with a botched paint job in the engine bay. That lead to a massive search and failure to find a painter to fix it. During all of it Joe and I butted heads over it and the 82 and have not spoken since Aug of 2007. That and he hated my spouse. Then the economy hit bottom here in GA. I'm sure you have heard about how bad it is here in Atlanta. Unemployment keeps creaping up. I think we have the highest right now? My job situation has been unstable, so the paint money had to get used for other things!

It so sucks cause all of us were so starting to break gound on the 3.4s... Well I have not given up just yet. I just hope the car will be ok. The wiring got cut when Joe was doing a rewire job while I was porting the heads. Not sure where he stopped and started. It was a total Hide the wires project. SO who knows. Right now it looks like spagetti. The brake and fuel lines are long gone. He got stainless hardline to replace them... again clean routing. Well thats all well and good, but I have never bent line and he did not even start them. And the holes are welded up in the frame so no going back stock.

The body paint... holey crap.... the doors got hit with a drill when he mad some holes and Mom had a refrigerator replaced and the guys drug my headlight doors face down across the concrete. But hey my door Jams look great... LOL... So I guess I will need an all over paint job by the time I'm done. Was not planning to show it till I do my bumper swaps and paint anyway, but still ugh!

So I might be throwing a put the car together party at the new house when I get the car there. LOL!

My plan was to actally buy a stock 2.8 Bird and use it as guide to put mine back together. Then I can trace what wire is what and where it when stock....

That is the way I went for clearance. I think they actually clean up and really set off the engine well if you take the time to polish out the fins and give the rest a nice coat of paint. That and since they aren't stamped steel you can avoid the spread loaders...

Funny thing... the iron dukes in the fieros have horribly leaking valve covers. I actually fixed my problem in my 84 Indy Fiero in part by using the bird's old spread loaders on it... LOL

Ah, so you're still around. Sad about the car, but it will live again!

I saw your episode of "Rides" a few months ago.

Re: Back to stock??

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out who's who on here now....so many different people than when we were on here before, Shannon. Dale, you did what? you bought a v8 car? lol. I had somebody send me a killer offer on a LT1 but I just don't really want to put a V8 in this car. It would be sweet, though. That's crazy to hear about redraif...I never thought that car would be neglected! lol. I never thought mine would be, either.
I charged up my battery the other day and got the car running again but it isn't running very well! Just wanted to make sure things were still functioning for when I do find another motor to drop in. I'm getting anxious now. I know where a 3.4 is locally that I could pick up for $500 but I think I can get a better deal than that. Right now, a better deal would be great!!

Yea, I kept having valve train problems on my v6. The car had "memories" with it, and was not bought for me in the first place. So I found a v8/vert for a good price. More what I wanted, so I went and got it. I have nothing against a v6, they all have a place and time.

Wow, lots of familiar names here! I haven't logged onto this site in at least 2 years that I can recall, and I'm glad to see AM, Dale, and yes, Shannon (Redraif) here too. My story is similar in that I moved away, into a new housem and I just got engaged last week. I sold my 97 Camaro SS, and I'm about to get started on my long-neglected 87 Trans Am. I'm also working on an 81 Corvette.

First, I would like to say that that I hate that a six year friendship with Shannon ended like it did. We had some really good times, working on her car, going to shows, etc, and the whole thing has bothered me ever since. There is no reason to rehash exactly what happened; we both know, we feel differently about it, and I'm not here to argue with anybody, or for any drama with new spouses. I don't have time for that sort of thing. I'm posting here because I miss our friendship, and want to help with the car in any way that I can.

It does bother me immensely that Shannon's car is still in pieces, however, and I'm willing to help her do something about that. As good as I feel about most of the things I did with her car over the years, I feel bad that the last thing we undertook...a major overhaul that included dozens of modifications...has resulted in a partially disassembled nightmare for her, rather than the national recognition that I had hoped it would. I may be able to get someone to re-spray the engine compartment (though there will be lots of sanding ahead of time, and it may be best to yank the engine/trans back out); i have a couple of ideas on that, so let me know. The wiring should be no big deal; as I remember, most of what needs to be done is extending the wiring to the TPS and other sensors, and maybe a little work to the front light harness. Its all color coded per factory, so I can get that sorted out. Same for the hardlines. My email address is still the same, as is my cell phone number, so just let me know.

I just realized that Shannon has owned her car for just over 20 years...its time that she can drive and show it again!
