air pump rattle
my sister has a 92 rs with the 3.1 and i was trying to figure out a way to remove or rebuild the air pump. The reason for this is that when the car is at an idle it sounds like it is going to explode. So if any one knows of a belt length that will work if i remove the pump or if anyone else has had this issue i would love to hear from you.
FYI: my sister told me the cheaper the better

Re: air pump rattle
You can just get a shorter belt and not run the pump. There's a tech article on how to do it for v8 cars but i'm not sure about 6 bangers. If you really wanna keep an air pump you can have mine for $5 plus shipping. As is though, never could hear it over my water pump and alternator.

Re: air pump rattle
hey thanks guys, but I looked at the car today and I don't think their is a way to just run a shorter belt because the exsisting belt runs from the A/C to the alternator to the smog pump and then to the water pump. One thing that i saw in a post on the archives was someone put an idler pulley in place of the smog pump but i have no idea what idler would work. ??????????

Re: air pump rattle
can't rebuild an air pump, get a new one, have heard of folks gutting it but I dunno on that. Had a siezed one open once, how they last so long is beyond me, metal blades scrapping on aluminum walls......

looked at this post and started to wish my sister had a v/8 in that damn car because what they did with those motors is brillant.

Re: air pump rattle
many automatics didn't have an air pump, just an idler pulley in place of it. you need this pulley, I did it to mine.
