That's all it does... it tells you what the code is. It has the exact same function as the $15 Haynes manual. It doesn't tell you what to do about it like the FSM does.

The FSM can be picked up at dealer closings (and there seem to be a lot these days), eBay (where both of mine came from for a total of about half of a new one), or for about $80 on www.helminc.com . The Helm's ones are just reprints using the old microfilms (possibly also CD-ROMs). There may also be service bulletins and updates... Be sure to try to pick those up as well.

Have you done a recent tune up? What color are your spark plugs? Are you getting any other codes?

Re: having some 3.1 engine problems

One word: VATS. Use a DMM on your ignition key pellet and find the resistance. Either that or the system has a failure somewhere. VATS controls both the starter solenoid power and the fuel injection pulses.

Re: having some 3.1 engine problems

Is the pump priming when you first turn the key on? If not, you have other problems, but the VATS disables the fuel injectors by not commanding the bin in the ECM that the proper key has been inserted and it also disables the starter by cutting the current flow to the starter solenoid's purple wire.

Re: having some 3.1 engine problems

New question: Is the check engine light coming on when you turn the key to on? If it is, uncover the diagnostic port by your right knee under the dash, and use a wire to connect the 2 terminals in the top right hand corner together, then turn the key on. The light will start to flash in a pattern, and the radiator fan will come on if installed. The light will flash once, pause and then flash twice, for a code 12, and then there will be another pause after three of these codes and any other codes will be flashed out. You're looking to see if you have a flash code 46 (four flashes, a pause, six flashes). If you have this code, you're not going anywhere soon, as this is a result of some problem between the VATS security module and the engine computer, and the computer won't run the engine until the VATS issue is fixed.
