3.8 surges while driving
On my '99 Camaro I drove it about a month ago and was running 70 mph down the highway. Then out of no where my car dies, but starts back up when I crank it. It runs fine until I put a little gas to it, then it dies. If I Give it some gas it runs fine, but once I let off and push the gas again it dies. Well now it started surging while I drive down the road. Picks up around 400 to 500 R.P.M. then drops back to normal. Is my fuel pump going out?

Re: 3.8 surges while driving
usually surging can be blamed on a bad TPS, but it shouldn't make the car die like that on the highway. A bad TPS will also make the car surge in its idle, adjust it before you replace it, if you decide to

Ok maybe I'm blind, but I can't find my TPS. Where is it and what does it look like?

I still dont see one. The only thing on my intake is the MAF sensor, then on the side of it is a plug with about eight wires on it. It is riveted on to the throttle body. Is that it?

got any pics? I'm not familiar with these newer Gen III V6's.....
It should be right on the side of your throttle body on the very front passenger side, its connected to the throttle plate inside the throttle body.

Re: 3.8 surges while driving
Actually, I think it's on the driver's side. He doesn't have a Gen III 60*... his is a 90* based on a 305. Either way, it will have 3 wires running into it. The thing you are looking for is right at the front of the plenum, right where it says "3800 Series II", similar to the "Tuned Port Injection" placard on the 3rd Gen TPI engines.
It could be a MAF/MAP problem or some sort of massive vacuum leak. I would try to hook it to a scanner and see if you are getting any Current P(owertrain) codes (also look at the history codes). It seems to me that the PCM should be setting the Check Engine light. If it does, when the engine dies, it should be saving a "snapshot" of recorded data from when the error(s) occured. You'll need a scantool to access this.

I'm about to post some pics. of my throttle body for your viewing pleasure. I did find a vacuum line off located by the back, drivers side of the intake plenum. It was connected to what looks like an E.G.R. valve, but it's located at the end of the fuel lines. I'll try to get a pic. of this as well, but it's a little hard to see. I'm about to go drive the car and see if this fixed the problem.

Re: 3.8 surges while driving
Ok the vacuum line was not connected to the fuel pressure regulator. Once I put this back on my engine runs like it should now. Thanks for all the help and here are some pics. for ya............

Re: 3.8 surges while driving
Maverick H1L has a point and it could be MAF/MAP problem.
But I"m pretty sure the problem your having is your fuel pump going.
From the stuff thats going on with the camaro it really does sound like a fuel pump going out.
I might be wrong so if it is the MAF/MAP then even better but keep us in the loop.
Hey Maverick...not saying your wrong
. .I'm hoping your right because I'm going throu the same problem....
