engine starting problems

so, i have a 91 3.1. I can go out after a couple days and it will start the first time no problem. Yes it has the usual high rev then kind of sputters down but rpms pick right back up. BUT, once i get it hot and turn it off if i wait about 10 min or so it will turn and try and start after choking a few hard jolts and shut off and the more i try the worse it gets. It smells like it is flooded and if i put my foot into it it will start after about 10 to 15 tries. Any ideas on what the problem could be? thanks in advance for your comments

Re: engine starting problems

Check your fuel pressure. Sounds as though you have injectors leaking and flooding out the engine.

BTW, clear flood mode (turn the fuel pump off) only happens at WOT.

Re: engine starting problems

Have about 40-45 psi of fuel pressure when running and goes up to 45 when the trottle opens. I did notice that when the problem is occuring that the fuel pressure doesnt drop back down to 40 psi like it does at idle when its running normally. I will be checking the fuel pressure regulator tomorow or monday.

I hope you have some Security Torx bits... Those screws have a pin in the middle that keeps the average Torx bit out because, technically, supposedly, the V6 FPR is "non-serviceable".

Also, check that the vacuum line running to the FPR from the throttle body hasn't been clogged or damaged in some way.

Is the vacum line that runs to the air pump nessasary? This 3.1 is a pain in my ***. I cant wait to get my v8 in there instead, so much easier.

If you don't live in a state with required emissions testing, or you know someone who will let you get away with it, the whole AIR system is unnecessary, but you will need to leave the check valve in the pass exhaust manifold and plug the pipe on the catalytic converter.

Re: engine starting problems

all you need is like a t8 bit or whatever the size is. mine was leaking a bit out the side. tore it down today but didn't see a problem. torqued em down to make sure i didn't leave one side too loose by accident. i found the problem (maybe)the rubber grommet on the throttle body is shot. no es bueno...

Re: engine starting problems

Figured out my problem. Replaced fuel rail and 6 different injectors and been running great ever since. Actually im kinda impressed with the lil 3.1 in there.
