help!!! 92 camaro rs 3.1 im going to blow it up!!!

i have a 1992 camaro rs 3.1 v-6 i replaced the fuel pump, the plugs and wires and throttle position sensor and still runs like crap. it was idling fine but under a load it would drop off so i put a new fuel pump in and that got better now when i start it it idles funny and sometimes dies. when i take it down the road it has good pick up speed but no *** what so ever it is still running rough any thing you might suggest would be great... thought about putting in an old school carburated 305 but not sure if i would have to fined anew driveshaft i knowi will need motor mounts and maybe a raditor but not reall sure so someone let me know on both questions please. thanks again..

How's about the signal at the MAP? Vacuum leaks? Color of the spark plugs?

Re: help!!! 92 camaro rs 3.1 im going to blow it up!!!

the fuel pressure was only 20lbs while running in park thats why i changed the fuel pump but i never checked the pressure after changing it just assumed it was good. as far as the timing no have not check it, before changing the fuel pump it idle fine, purred like a kitten now it seems to idel high then go down and almost stall.

Re: help!!! 92 camaro rs 3.1 im going to blow it up!!!

Use a voltmeter on the MAP between the black and the green wires... Check the plugs to find out what color they are (color of spark plug tips tells whole books about how an engine is actually running ). Chances are that all you need to do is disconnect the battery and run through an idle relearn procedure since the ECM lost its calibration due to the low fuel pressure (thereby increasing the pulse width to the injectors trying to squeeze as much fuel out of the low system pressure as possible). And now that everything's back to normal, the ECM is throwing MASSIVE amounts of fuel into the cylinders that the engine can't handle.

Try resetting the ECM.

Re: help!!! 92 camaro rs 3.1 im going to blow it up!!!

One thread at a time, please... SOOO confusing.

Stock timing is at the bottom of the second V after the TDC deep V in the timing pointer, 10* BTDC. Mark both the damper and the timing pointer with white paint or wite-out before you start the engine and then just line up the white lines.

did you correctly adjust the Throttle position sensor when you put it in? that could make it idle funny

92's aren't supposed to have a TPS adjustment (and you would need to modify it to adjust it), although I've found sometimes they need it.

Re: help!!! 92 camaro rs 3.1 im going to blow it up!!!

Things like that have to be done whenever a drastic change has happened to the engine controls. Same reason the ECM has to be reprogrammed when drastic changes have been made to the engine (increased displacement, bigger cam, bigger fuel injectors, exhaust system), so that the ECM knows what to do with the new parts. The ECM gets used to the engine running one way (drastically lean), so when you fix it without resetting the ECM, it will continue to run exactly as before (except drastically rich with good fuel pump).

Re: help!!! 92 camaro rs 3.1 im going to blow it up!!!

the way you check the map is to crank the engine and while its running pull off the vacu hose and it should die right away if not the it shouldnt have start any way because it has to have that vac on the map

hey the maverick im having about the same problem with my 3.1. i can start the motor and it idles fine but if go to give it gas or rev it up it acts like it wonts to die right away and if i let off it idles again. i finally got ahold of the first owner and he told me that he replced the fuel pump and the egr valve and o2 and some eithers on the motor. now the guy the i bought it from he told me that it mit be the computer but i dont see that computer half *** working so if any body know something i dont please put your two cent in because im about to just put the TPI350 in it like it needs

I just bought one of these 92 RS's and I had to go through HELL and HIGH WATER just to get the SOB to a rough start. So after an Alternator, SMOG Pump w/ AIR Control Valve, A few Vac Lines, Thermostat, Fuel Pump, and a Transmission Line I got what you hear in the YT Vid
. Next up...Plugs, Wires, PCV Valve, EGR Valve, Ignition Coil, Distributor Cap / Rotor...Please help your expertise would be appreciated, I'd like to get her running decently as she is after all the Heritage Edition lol

Your tune up plans should clear your rough running issue. I'd suggest a fuel filter as well.
