91 RS 3.1L Need more Horse Power

I'm looking at ways of spending my money, i could buy a whole new engine and get basic 350 horsepower or what could i do for the same price and get that much power out of my stock v6?

About the only way to get 275 HP out of a V6 is to swap it for a 3.4 and go through the hybrid swap. And then you'll probably want to rebuild or replace the transmission, which may already be worn out.

what about Getting a wrecked LS1 and taking the engine drivetrain etc and doing that? Would that get the most bang for my buck?

Nitrous is the best bang for your buck you can get and I'm starting to believe that you'd be well in the safe zone with a 150 or so shot on a daily driver in decent shape. If you have the skills and recources you could turbo it as well. I've done both to mine and it still isn't dead. I only put $150 into the turbo by being super frugal. I'm certain a much cleaner looking setup could be done for under $500 with ebay knockoff turbos.

15psi on an otherwise stock 2.8 should get you around 280hp & 320ft/lbs according to my software. I have yet to prove that out on the track.

Re: 91 RS 3.1L Need more Horse Power

Really depends on your hp goal...imo don't go nitrous, its more a matter of opinion or preference, but in mine its fake hp....and for around the same price you could get a turbocharger setup if you know where to look and can do the work yourself. N/A you won't hit 275 without some serious mods, ie. plenumless intake, aluminum heads, porting, 1.6 rockers, big cam, higher than stock CR and such.
Mav you really think a 3.4 will hit 275 just with hybrid swap? seems a tad optimistic, but then its hard to say, but I know pilsbry dynoed his iron head 3.4 at 201 hp at the crank with pretty much same mods as me, but his clutch was slipping bad so I have no idea how accurate that dyno was...but if it was I don't think aluminum heads would make 75 hp, but then I really don't know, as I have yet to dyno my car and see what it really makes...still have to fix my transmission and finish the engine. And shouldn't a 700r4 take around 300 hp stock?

Re: 91 RS 3.1L Need more Horse Power

IF he were to get the right pistons and head gaskets to get the compression under control (3.4 needs a piston swap with the 3x00 series heads anyways as the static compression would be WAY too big with the stockers), ported/polished heads, big cam, proper tune, and the newer heads with the 1.76" intake valves, it's doable. Keep in mind my 3.1 should get around 30 HP with the (small port) heads alone (no piston changes which bumps up the compression). Also keep in mind we haven't seen the full output of Pilsbry's car... Clutch was probably losing 30% or so of the power output of the engine. :edit: And also keep in mind that Pilsbry's iron heads MIGHT flow as well fully ported/polished as a stock small port 3x00 series head, unported/unpolished. If the OP were to go large port 3500 heads, he'd most definitely reach 275.

And, as for the 700R4 trans, it depends on how much of a beating it's taken in its life. Theoretically, it should hold to about 350-400HP, but that's assuming the guts are in good shape, which they probably aren't (neglected fluid changes, power braking and other abuse).

Re: 91 RS 3.1L Need more Horse Power

Actually I've done the math on it before....3.4 hybrid has less compression ratio, or at least less than a 2.8 hybrid would, for a 3.4 with 3500 heads static compression is 12.33, and with my cam would be just below 11 dynamic, but out of my comfort zone and I plan to turbocharge at the same time I go aluminum heads since I'll need new exhaust manifolds anyways for either one, and lowered CR for either one, so might as well knock it out all in one shot I figure.
30% huh, was kind of wondering what % I could guestimate off of...
Assuming he wasn't making boost, I can expect 304 ft lbs of torque and 258 hp at the crank if I go off his dyno, using 15% drivetrain loss. I have pretty much same mods if memory serves...turbo withstanding.

I was guessing at the 30% loss. IIRC, the clutch was crapping out before he got halfway into the powerband...
(I'll re-edit this later)

still waiting on donations to give you guys accurate numbers i ran it at less than half throttle and it crapped out at 4000ish rpms right before boost kicked up
