3.1L turd needs some power

Im new to the third gens. I've got a 91 3.1 l firebird that i got for my wife. We went on a day cruise the other day, and found out how much power this thing is lacking. It was hard for her to keep the car at 70 with the hills here in arizona. I want to add some power to this thing. I've tried to research headers, but its confusing. What headers will fit this car? Where can i find them? I saw some on summit, there's one that's a nice kit, with a Y pipe ( pn # 70-1206). Would that fit? To my understanding, the 2.8 n 3.1 are essentially the same motor. I dont wanna make the car ***** out fast. Just enough to keep up with traffic on the 75mph highways and not have trouble getting up hills.

Yes, those PaceSetter Headers will fit, and they're about the only set made for the V6 F-body. Besides those headers, basic bolt-ons are about your only path to power, and not much more of it. Probably enough to do what you want, though...

I say this way too often, but it needs gears. What you need is more torq, gears are torq multipliers. 3.73's or 4.10's will wake that thing up.

how bad will 373's kill gas mileage? out here the speed limits are 75mph. I dont want that thing to get worse on mileage

Re: 3.1L turd needs some power

It won't if your foot is tuned properly. You cruise at what, 2100rpm @ 60mph now? I cruise around 2300rpm with the tcc locked in overdrive with 3.73's. Here's another question, how often does the converter unlock when you're at those speeds? All the time right? If you're turning a higher rpm with more torq with the tcc locked all the time you're going to see better mileage with less pedal movement.

First off do a full on tuneup, I'm sure you will see an improvement if you haven't done one yet...always do a tuneup when buying a used car, unless its really low mileage.

mine has plenty of power stock
just clean the injectors
if it idles rough or cuts out
check the injector resistance is 12 ohms

try irridium plugs from denso
msd ignition cap and rotor
ac delco wires

Re: 3.1L turd needs some power

yea we've done the complete tuneup- changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, fuel filter, pcv valve...i dont know much about tcc's, it's been years since ive owned an automatic. I cut that metal kettle lookin thing that surrounds the air filter, so its getting at least more air, hot or not. Once the weather cools it'll get cooler air. At some point i'll make a better cai, although this is pretty much the same . would 373's make that big of a difference? yet not completely kill her mileage? also, from headers, how much of a power gain is there?

I'm guessing you did change the air filter right? headers I seem to recall 13 hp or something in that area, a cam would probably help a lot, as would a high flow cat, and a catback would help too.

Re: 3.1L turd needs some power

gears and headers are ur best bet i was gong to recomend 4:10's but being as ur speed limit is 95 that isnt a good idea. 3.73's will increase ur rpms 310 rpms so say u crusie at 70 at 2100 roms with the new gears u will be at 2410 rpms

to be honest in new jersey were everything is flat i saw a big increase in gas milage around town and some on the highway going from the stock 3:42's to 4:10's but out speed limit is also 65
