switchin' her out

Hi all. Ive done a search and i cant find anything useful the really pertains to my subject exactly.
Anyway, i have an 85 Bird with the 2.8 multiport, ive found a 3.1 from a 91 Camaro. What im wondering is if the engine will A; bolt right in, which i know it will. B; will i have to change ANYTHING to make the motor function, besides the computer which is included in the sale.
So thanks in advance my V6 brothers, and may your 6 cylinders of raw pavement raping power do good unto you.

Re: switchin' her out

Ok, so the dimensions of the motor are exactly the same, now, what that doesnt tell me is if i have to switch out any thing like my, rad, alternator, ect, or will these things mount right to the brackets on the 3.1?

....althought with the block being the same it only makes sense that it would...

Re: switchin' her out

If you want to just drop the 3.1 in and drive you will need the wire harness and all the required sensors for the 3.1 . Or you could swap the throttle body on from the 2.8 and some other things and use what wires you have and computer and run it that way . Or find a 3.4 out of a 4th gen and swap intakes and run with that .

Re: switchin' her out

I would swap the 3.1 in as if it were a 2.8 and keep the 2.8 electronics. From what I've read that involves keeping the 2.8 TB.

Basically you want to treat the 3.1 as just a long block, and swap anything from the 2.8 onto the 3.1 to satisfy the 2.8 ECM.

Swapping to the 3.1 ECM also requires swapping the engine harness as well, due to some changes that were made going from the '165 ECM to the '7730 ECM. You could also, modify the 2.8L harness, but I find many people are not comfortable with making modifications like that.

Re: switchin' her out

2.8 came with an '870 or '302 originally. The '165 swap didn't come for a couple decades when turbosmirf worked out the repin and I wrote the bins.

Why not go for more compression and displacement? Check it out.

Right...
I've been reading too much what the V8 guys are writing in the DIY PROM forum....

I would still just treat the swap like a 2.8 re&re.
