1991 V6 engine decision

I currently have a 1991 camaro rs and not quite sure what to do with the engine. I have 240K miles on it and i drive it everyday to work. I love my V6 its a daily driver and cruiser (Highway ~ 26 mpg cant beat it)

Should i just rebuild the V6 i have... ?

Or should i look to find a crate motor ready to go?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1991 V6 engine decision

is something wrong with it? if not drive till it breaks...keep it tuned up and the oil changed and you should be good

when it goes you can either rebuild the v6 or get a 3.4L v6 from a yard to rebuild, either one will work out good for you

Re: 1991 V6 engine decision

Only problem about a rebuild is that might take awhile (weeks) and i dont have another car, and i heard a crate motor is cheaper and easier. Im going to drive it until it dies i take real good care of my car oil change, spark plugs, already put a new transmission, alternator. i should be good until i reach 300k but just want to start doing some research and any help would be nice.

Just dont know where to find a good crate motor that is reliable

Crate motors aren't made anymore to the best of my knowledge, well not for our v6 F-bodies anyway, you could probably find some 3.4 crates, but expect to pay over a grand, imo, you should find another 60/6 engine used, and rebuild that, so that it's ready to go in, when your current engine kicks off or you are ready to swap at least. And not sure if you care about hp or not, but if so I would opt for the 3.4 swap.

Re: 1991 V6 engine decision

you can still buy rebuilt engines, usually shortblocks aren't too expensive. Check your local auto parts stores, they can usually get them.

If you have all the tools and equipment that swap could be done in a day or less.

I agree that a 3.4 from a 4th gen would be a good alternative although most of them are going to have 100K+ miles on them by now. If you can find one for cheap enough it might be worth it to throw in all new bearings, gaskets, valve seals and a new cam/lifters with a good timing set.

Pretty much, it needs plug wires, fuel lines hooked up and fluids. I'm just finishing up another swap in a different car, '02 3400 into a 91 Cavalier. Once i'm done shaking it down the Camaro will be pushed back in the garage and finished up.

Re: 1991 V6 engine decision

if you aren't for a powertrain upgrade, then you should hit up one of the pick ur part yards and get yourself an engine, don't know if it's the same where you are as it is here in California where we get 50% off days and if it's raining we get a 25% off discount, just not combined ... you could easily pick up an entire engine with FI for about 150 or so with the discount... get that engine rebuilt and have it ready to go.. however, i don't know what the shelf life would be on that engine, so you'd probably be better off swapping it as soon as you had the downtime for the swap...

edit: lol.. you're in Los Angeles, you should have a pick ur part or something similar near you... they're all over the place...

Engines can sit for a while(years) if done properly, ie covered in plastic, oil on all the necessary parts and places(prevents stuff from rusting), without coolant in it, though it is still better to just put it in use right away.

the oil part explains why when you go get something at the auto parts store it's all greasy... learned something new today...

Yep, brake rotors are a good example of that.

I rebuilt mine for under $600 that includes paint, and fluids. I did all the work myself though.
