Posi Rear End Question

I have a posi rear end in my '87 Camaro. The rear end came out of an '83 Z28. This may be a dumb question but why can't I do a burn out? I've checked the horsepower ratings of both the 87 V6 Camaro (135) and the 83 V8 Z28 (145). Can 10 Horses really make that much of a difference? Or is this more of a case of torque?

Yup, it's a torque issue. If you have a tired V6 with good tires and brakes, it's hard to bust 'em loose. I could usually light 'em up w/ my 3.1 though. Here, try this. Put your car in reverse and backup a few feet. If you shift into drive right b/f the car comes to a stop, and mash the gas, you should be able to do a burn-out.

Doing that is extremely not cool. Trannys are not cheap!!!!!

Even my perfect-running, 85k mile 2.8 had issues laying rubber before I tuned it up. This was more because of my grippy tires (Firehawk GTAs) than the motor. Plus, if you have tires any wider than the stock ones (P215s), that won't help either. If you wanna lay a real nice strip, tune it up, take a 90 degree right from a standing start and nail it

Are P225's bigger than P215's? Because those are what I am running and I can start from a brake stand and peal them off 1 block (measured!!). But again it might help because I have line lock!!

From my understanding, the posi clutches can wear out, which will leave you an open rear-end.

Just get the Energy Suspension trans mount, it's $20 from Summit Racing. It's polyurethane, and undestructable. I went thru 3 trans mounts in 3 years- then I got the ES one.

I'd say it's safe to do brakestands every now and then... do it all the time and yeah your trans will take a beating.

Posi clutches need that posi additive, which keeps them from burning out too early. Make sure to do regular fluid changes in the rear... I change mine every year.

It's supposed to be harder for a posi-equipped car to burn out because you need to break both tires loose instead of just one.

There's an issue with burning out a posi you guys might want to know of. Supposedly, by putting your tiny spare on the back, the posi unit will be slipping all the time when you're going forward, since the tiny spare is moving faster than the big tire. You prevent this by taking one of your front tires and putting it on the back (in place of the flat), and putting your tiny spare on the front. Of course, I'm screwed, since there's no way my big tires will fit on the front.

the might fit, but i doubt you'll be able to turn the car it'd be like driving a drag car through nice, curvy, country, missouri roads.
