3.4 Engine Rebuild Write Up (Pic Heavy)

So I got this engine plus a 700-R4 transmission for $100. The guy said the engine blew a head gasket but the transmission was great. I'm in the middle of rebuilding both. I'm going to get the transmission professionally rebuilt but i'm doing the engine myself. I started it in my power mechanics class and at the beginning knew little or nothing about rebuilding engines. Here's how it started

Re: 3.4 Engine Rebuild Write Up (Pic Heavy)

When i worked on the engine i found a lot of surprises. For instance it sat so long that the water pump was rusted on and the oil drained thicker than pudding. It took a week or more for all the old oil to come off. The screws and valves were rusted beyond belief like this one:

Oh and the pistons were wicked bad too:
Before

After

After 5+ cycles in a block washer it surface rusted up on me, so i wire wheeled the exterior and honed the cylinders.More wire wheeling to come but here is how it sits right now:

You probably would've noticed since the block is bare, but double check it for cracks, if the HG cracked, it probably had coolant/water in the oil, hence causing things to rust as it sat, last but not least to keep the block from rusting, you should coat/paint the block, and put oil on the cylinders, or you could even coat the whole thing in oil to keep it from rusting.

please keep the large pics coming, and detail every step. I guess you're going to use the intake off of your 3.1? If so, this thread will be very valuable to those of us that plan to do it in the future.

Sure, there are writeups out there already, but pics, and lots of them, are really nice

58mark, I have done the swap, and there are 2 threads, it really isn't that hard, idk if you plan on doing it or not, but if you do and have any questions PM me, I do have some pics also, but tbh I don't have as many as I would like..I really wish I had one of my empty engine bay, kicking myself in the *** over that.
