I love my camaro even if she is a slow turd
the body style still looks better than most cars on the road. I must say though after owning a firebird with a 305 there is very little difference between the 2.8 and a 305 at least the v6 has an excuse being a small engine but the 305 was a real turd for a v8. Supreme Member

I must say though after owning a firebird with a 305 there is very little difference between the 2.8 and a 305 at least the v6 has an excuse being a small engine but the 305 was a real turd for a v8.As for my opinion on them, they are generally stout engines and rarely trouble prone, and in the two other cars I owned that had a 60/6 I never had to fix anything, but for some reason this car and both engines have proven VERY problematic, there is always something wrong...the original engine turned out to have a cracked block, and the current one ran great for 2 weeks, but now it has an internal issue(bad noises) and is not idling right(stalling and running really rough at idle), I think my piston rings are shot, and the idle Idk, everything was fine with the current engine till the fuel pump went out(replaced it), for the 2 weeks it ran it was pretty good though, not as much power as I would have liked, but then I never really did get to give it the full boot because of transmission issues, and not wanting to go faster than 85 due to several issues and not having it on a good road for it or my gps to clock it.
As for my setup its a 3.4 with a 260 grind delta cam with new lifters, MSD ignition coil, taylor spark plug wires, MSD cap and rotor, AC delco plugs, ported heads(with new stem seals) and manifolds, gutted TPI snorkel airbox, AC delete, EGR delete in progress, soon to be charcoal canister and vent line relocated to a filter on top of the sending unit, pacesetter headers, magnaflow high flow cat, and dynomax catback.
My engine bay is pretty much gutted of non essentials, I like to keep it simple, looks better, easier to work on in terms of less to work around, and less to work ON.
As for dress up kits, none, but there are dress up ITEMS, I know there is a brake master cylinder chrome cover, a chrome radiator cover, you can always get SS braided hoses, or even slip on covers, you can polish the VCs and intake manifolds, get fiero VCs or edelbrock chrome ones, chrome battery cover, chrome radiators, honestly you really don't need kits, even the few things you can't get in chrome you can have chrome plated...personally I just painted my intake manifolds and VCs for now.
This should give you some ideas:

Re: show the v6's some love, post pics and talk about your v6 here =)
I absolutely love my V6. I can average over 31 MPG on the highway, and around 23 city. It has beautiful low and mid-range torque. I love letting people ride with me, punching it off the line, throwing them back in the seat, and then watching the look on their face when I tell them, "It's just 140 HP V6."
Also in comparison to the 305, the V-6 can respond to small upgrades, especially removing the A/C and installing smaller pulleys, or removing the AIR Pump. The 305's, even with TPI only had as much as 215 HP, and still ran high 15's in the qtr mile. The V-6 can easily be manipulated to get that kind of performance, and average better fuel economy simply because the engine is operation more efficiently than a stock 305 V-8.
Building a V-6 to get the additional 70 HP, would inmprove the thermal efficiency of the engine. Both engines are very reliable, but let's face it the 305 is right up there in the "Worst engine performers of all time" as the Chevy 307.
As far as engine reliabilty when building the V-6, You shouldn't have to worry too much. The last generation of 3100 SFI V-6's that GM produced had 195 HP. If they didn't have a problem with cracked intake gaskets, which has nothing to do with the engines tuning, they would last just as long as our cast-iron 140 HP engines.
When I bought my Camaro, I ran 17.784 @ 72mph in the qtr. I haven't been to the strip, since I have modified my engine. I do plan on going in the next few months, when the track opens up for the season.
I will say that I have removed my A/C, installed a smaller pulley on the alternator, removed the air box, installed the rubber throttle boot form a 3100 SFI V-6, a cone-style aircleaner, I even fabricated a P/S pump pulley to fit off the same 3100 SFI V-6. That particular pulley is carbon fiber, istead of steel, and about a 1/2" smaller diameter. I used all GM factory parts off of various GM vehicles, and the total spent under the hood on "Performance" modifications totals to $21.29 for the cost of the air cleaner. Currently I have out performed some of the 97-99 Grand Prix's with 3.1L engines(rated at 160 HP @ 5200 RPM and 185 lbs-ft of torque @ 4200 RPM) as well as the newer bodystyle Eclipses with the 2.4L Variable valve timing 4 banger rated at 162 HP. In both of those instances, I had a pssenger in my car, and the other driver did not.
My goal is to maybe go with a chip, a high volt coil, 8.2mm wires, remove the AIR pump and catylitic converter. I'm going to retain the EGR, since I am not changing the cam or heads. I have come to learn that cams for EGR applications have different specs, maily the lift, as opposed to ones that are for non-EGR applications.

I haven't ran my V6 at the track yet. But it's got a cam, ported heads, 1.6 RRs, and a double roller timing chain. Otherwise dead stock. Love the thing. My tranny is just crap.

you want some love? here's some love. (it's about the car more than the engine, but you'll get the point...
I'm a private music teach that that goes from school to school to teach lessons. Today I was outside a high school waiting for the bell to ring to go inside for 2nd period. This high school has a couple classrooms outside and the students cross the parking lot to get to their next class.
ok the scene is set. I'm sitting in my car with the window slightly crack, finishing up a post on TGO from my smartphone...
two high school boys walk by, I'm not looking at them, but I hear them talking.
"Oh ****!!! Look at this ******* car, I LOVE this thing, it's so bad *** "
At that point I got out of my car, and when he saw the owner of the car was not only right there, but was a teacher, he looked a little embarrased, but I let him off the hook with a little grin, shut my door, and moved along
The reason I'm saying this is not to brag, but to point out that 99% of the people that see you in your car never know, OR CARE what kind of engine it has in it. 99% of the time even when you're driving it, you really don't have an opportunity to do anything with it that makes one bit of difference which engine you have.
Just love your car, get it in a condition that makes you proud to drive it, and enjoy the hell out of it. Don't hang your head about having a v6, just make your car as good as it can be.

I haven't seen my V6 in like 4 months.. but i'd imagine it still looks like this;

The snow is melting finally, once the average temp is up into the 50's i'll get back to work on it.

Re: show the v6's some love, post pics and talk about your v6 here =)
My 1988 Camaro sport coup was a car I threw together form several wrecked 3rd gens that I had bought to part out. It currently has 1991 16inch wheels, 1991 ground effects, a 3.4 v6 from a 1995 Camaro, 5 speed, t-tops. The engine is stock. I adapted a dual cat system from a 1989 IROC. The car is great for commuting and gets me through the high gas prices. It is easy to work on and maintain. I have rebuilt the 5 speed and the differential (added an auburn posi) and currently have 240,000 miles on it. I made sub frame connectors for it as the t top cars have more flex in them. The rear axle is from a 1992 Z28 with the aluminum calipers and about 3 years back, I added the 1LE front brake set up, so all I need is the v8 and i'd have an IROC clone. The 3.4 has plenty of power for the mountain driving I sometimes do here in Arizona.

I wont give up my v6. It is geared and modded so it has v8 like performance and v6 gas mileage. I want in the future to just tune up some performance with a few mods, spark plug and wires and the exhaust headers. It is nice to know I can instead if it was already at its limit.

right now, I don't have a way to post pics, but the old workhorse needs some new paint. It's dailey driver right now. I also have a 1987 Fiero Gt v6 5speed car that I'm restoring in my spare time. I'm thinking or repowering the Camaro again, but I'm not sure how I'll build the 3.4 just yet. but thanks for the interest. how about your car, tell me about it.
Re: show the v6's some love, post pics and talk about your v6 here =)
58 Mark, the last time I had my Camaro in Texas was driving Route 66 with it. I have been a member of Arizona's historic Route 66 association for a number of years, and have driven Route 66 a lot in it. I was visiting The Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo, The U Drop Inn in Shamrock, and the Barbed Wire Museum in McClean, all in the panhandle. A local saying is that the Texas Panhandle country is so flat, you can see for two days! I drive Arizona's sections of Route 66 several times a year just to do it. We promote people to get off the superslab interstate and get away from the chain restraurants & motels and go see the mom & pop places that are a part of americana that has been disappearing. So my Camaro sees a lot of highway miles.

LOL, I need to make up an excuse to make it up to that steakhouse... I need me some free steak! yes, I'm that confident I could eat a 72 Oz steak in one hour, it wouldn't even be close
it's great that you do cruises like that in your camaro. post some pics from those events when you can (photobucket is a great place to host pics)

I couldn't do the free 72 oz steak in an hour either, but the Big Texan is a Texas and a Route 66 classic and is a "must see". I have another Route 66cruise coming up in April and will drive my favorite section starting in Flagstaff and going to the Colorado River. My favorite section is between Flagstaff & Williams her in Arizona.

This is my Daily Driver 1989 2.8L 5-speed.
I really enjoy it for a daily. Enough power to get me around without getting me into too much trouble. I bought it for ~700 and have put some money into it, but overall it is a great car.

My first car was a V-6 F-body, same with my second car. Went through lots of V8s, including a 2000 Trans Am 6-speed, and now am back driving the 6 for my daily commute.

This v6 has been my passion for years. It's been a challenge to me to get this little motor (3.4) to move my camaro into the 14's, 13's and finally into the 12's. That was my ultimate goal. With stock internals I feed 15lbs of boost threw the fabricated intake. These days I'm into refining all of my mods that I have done over the years.

I put 10psi and 200 shot of nitrous through my 2.8 and all it would muster is about 13.2. But it was completely stock beside injectors & turbo stuff. I'm sure blowing through the stock converter didn't help either. Nice setup, I noticed the hydoboost in there how's it feel? I was considering the same when I put 25psi through the new motor.

starting to dress her up, just grabed extra valve covers and intakes to re finish, was gna get headers but holding off for now, anyone make/sell EGR block off plates for 90 3.1??
Re: show the v6's some love, post pics and talk about your v6 here =)
not aware of any as mods to v6 engines aren't as popular as mods to v8's. perhaps a v8 plate cut down to fit and re-drilled to the corrcect bolt pattern might be made to work.

Here is my baby when she had a clean engine. I have loved this car for the past several years, but it is now time to let it go. This car will be for sale soon as I am buying a 40k original mile '85 Berlinetta from my buddy! The RS currently has an IROC hood and wheels which I will be putting on the Berli. I will miss my trusty old V6.

Ive had one hell of a good time working on, upgrading and driving my V6 since 02. Its such a tough and badass lil engine. GM outdid themselves with it. Its no wonder it stuck around for so many years.... and then was brought back. It is with some regret that I will be leaving the V6 world after this year, but I couldnt let the deal go on the LT-1 that I got. Regardless, here is some details on my 6/60:
Upgraded from the 2.8L to a 3.4L
Mild P&P to heads and lower intake, gasket match heads to intake
Open air cleaner boxes w/ K&Ns
Comp Cam 1.52 roller tip rockers
Melling MTC-5 cam, lifters and springs
Heater system delete
ASP underdrive crank pulley
8mm Summit plug wires, AIR pump delete, 180 t-stat
Pacesetter headers and Dynomax cat back
Catco highflow catalytic convertor
Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch, 5.0 Pro Shifter
Zexel Torsen Posi w/ 3.42s
Spohn Subframe connectors, tubular polyurethane LCAs and relocation brackets, adjustable tubular panhard bar w/ polyurethane bushings
Dropzone lowering springs, KYB shocks and struts

RS FREAK, that looks so custom and cool under the hood! And that snow pic, LOL, I"d have to drive up in the mountains in winter during a storm here in Arizona to even come close to having my car covered in snow!

it does look cool, but other than that I guess I don't understand why you would remove what most people consider to be a really well designed cool air intake to put in... a cool air intake.
If it was a firebird I would understand, but the 89 rs already has the TPI dual intake system right from the factory

That snow pic is the only one I have of the RS with the IROC wheels on it. We've had a cold winter but only one real snow storm to speak of.

it does look great... something like that would look great combined with my polished plenum, dryer and alternator

can you show me more pics? or a build thread? even if it doesn't HELP the car... I'm tempted. Can you use that on a car with AC?

Not sure if it would work with an A/C compressor there as my car was a bone stocker with no options so never had one. It was super simple to build. just got a 90* and 45* elbow, intake tube with like 30* bend at the end, cone type filter, and some connectors all from Spectre, available at Schucks/O'Rielly's. Cut a 4" hole where the canister used to be and stick it all together.
Here is the only other pic I have of it. Note the lack of all emissions crap! Making the IAT sensor fit into the intak tube was the only challenging part.
