Well the coil is in......

And I gotta admit...I expected a little more from it!!!

It does feel like it pulls a LITTLE harder and easier, but not huge. I noticed a bigger improvement when I did the tune up a month ago. Admittedly though, anything that improves response and power even the slightest is a good thing!!

So for $55 bucks, the way I see it, it was worth it But I hate those goddamned rivets they use to hold the OEM coil in! Only GM would rivet a damn coil on!!!

Anyone wanna make an estimate on how much HP I may be making at this point? I know some of you don't like to guess, because it is after all only a guess...but I'd like to hear some opinions.

My mods are:
2 K&N air filters, no airbox baffles
Accel cap/rotor/coil/8.8 wires
Hypertech chip

I think back to how it felt before I started these mods, and there has been a very noticeable gain overall. It runs absolutely perfect...my GUESS is I might be around 155hp at this point. I think 20hp from a chip, K&Ns and ignition "enhancers" is reasonable. The standard estimate is about 10% gain from a chip (13.5hp to be exact JET claims a 15hp gain for a 2.8 chip that does the same thing as Hypertech), and I think the rest could add another 6-7 HP. Opinions everyone??

Congrats on the mod, and sorry if I misled you, the coil gave me something I could feel, but it wasn't a huge difference either.

I had a hypertech chip, I now have a Fastchip. I gave the hypertech one away, but do not believe those chip manfacturers claims.... They will vary on each car. I would say your mods:

2 K&N air filters, no airbox baffles
Accel cap/rotor/coil/8.8 wires
Hypertech chip
"Might" net you a 5-7HP real gain

sorry to burst the bubble, but always hope for more, but expect the very least....

Brian,
I know you had a Hypertech, I know you gave it away, and I know not all manufacturers claims can be believed. I also know that you feel the Fastchip is better. I've got a friend who just bought a Fastchip and was really dissapointed, just as you were with the Hypertech. Maybe some of it depends on the indvidual car, I don't know....but I know the chip made a difference. Hell, my own father noticed a gain!! And he drove the car like a turtle for 9 years

Supposedly that for you to feel a distinct difference, there's a roughly 10hp gain. (Granted that's merely an estimate...but I think Hot Rod is not a source to be taken lightly ) The only mod I ever noticed any real gain with was the chip. Maybe I didn't get as much as I thought, but from my experience with mods with my car and other cars, I am positive that little chip gave me more than 5hp.

Tom, don't feel bad about the coil!! You didn't mislead me...I was happy you told me about the Accel direct replacement! And like I said, any money spent on a mod that makes the car pull even the slightest bit harder, is money well spent!

So does anyone have any opinions as to what I should do next? Thanks to any and all responses.

BTW...I have an '87 ad for Hypertech, where they tested an '86 2.8 Camaro auto before and after their stage 1 chip. Supposedly the test was done by an independent group (USAC maybe? I gotta check). Anyways, they said before 0-60 was 11.5 sec, and after it was 10.7 sec, or something close to that. Never seen another maker post actual results like that...it was cool.

Dynomax cat back and pulleys would be a great next group of mods... My situation with the hypertech may be strange, but from the day I bought it I never noticed anything and was disappointed in it. On my fastchip I got thier stage 2 so it may be more aggressive, but on either I wish I would have saved the money for NOS....

Hehe...I'm thinking about a 50 shot of NOS...but there's nowhere close to here to get it refilled. Would a 50 shot hurt the motor much? I really don't wanna rebuild it for another couple of years.

The Dynomax will come soon I hope...I pray my factory exhaust will FINALLY rot off this winter (it was garaged every winter before I had it). Then I plan to do the Dynomax 2.5 inch with Borla tips. Have you had charging problems with pulleys though? Thats whats holding me back there....

I don't think the 50 shot would kill it; motors die from nitrous mainly because of large shots & insufficient fuel pressure. Make sure to get that fuel-pressure-safety-switch, in case you go lean, the switch kills the nitrous system so you don't burn a piston. Problem is that NOS nitrous system is close to $400.. you could buy two dynomax's and a set of pulleys with that.

Food for thought Tom...good point. I'm thinking that possibly even if the factory exhuast doesn't rot off by the Spring, I'm thinking I'll do the Dynomax/Borla tip combo anyway.

As for pulleys though, I've only heard from Fast RS on whether they had a problem or not. He hasn't, but some others I have talked to with non-3rd gens have had some major problems. Anyone wanna give me some advice here?
