2.8 to 3.4 engine swap

I have a 83 camaro with a blown 2.8 with a 3 speed auto and i was wondering about putting a 3.4 out of a 4th gen into it. Also what all would i need to have to swap it out and would the 3.4's 4 speed automatic tranny bolt up to the 2.8's tranny mounts. any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

There is a ton of information about this in the V6 forum including a couple of really long threads and writeups in the stickies. Have fun reading those, they are really well done and should answer all of your questions, but if not, the guys in the V6 forum are very helpful.

Unless yo plan to swap the 3.4 PCM or another PCM that you plan to then tune for the engine that will also run the later 4 speed, then I would stick with your original tranny, which if I'm not mistaken should be a 700R4, which is the mechanical version of the 4L60E that would be behind the 3.4.

On the pcm bit, but he does have a 3 speed so it would actually be an upgrade if he could get the PCM crap sorted out, personally I would swap to a 700r4 or a manual, 700r4s are a dime a dozen, can get a newly rebuilt one with some performance parts in it even for about $500-700 depending on how much performance.

It would bolt to the engine block yes, but the trans crossmember might have to be changed as the 3 speed one might be different(not sure) also being its a newer transmission it won't have a mechanical speedo drive, so you would have to get an electronic speedometer, there might be a way to run a mechanical speedo off of vss or whatever the newer transmissions use Idk offhand, but imo I would just huntdown a used 700r4 if you are on a budget, or if not buy a slightly built one from a trans shop.

Re: 2.8 to 3.4 engine swap

I swapped in a 3.4 from a 1995 camaro into my 1991 RS i gave to my son. I picked up a reman 700R4 for $600.00 from a local shop here. Use all your 2.8 manifolds, timing cover, and use the 3.4 oil pan as it won't make contact with the K memeber when the motor mounts sag over time. just ignore the oil level sender in the 3.4 pan. Also ignore the cam & crank sensors in the 3.4. leave them in place as removing them would require coming up with plugs. I just cut the wires off mine. The 3.4 is a good upgrade.
