Wanna Build a 2.8, and build it good.
look, before i got bashed, just saying, i'm only 19, and in college, i got a 2.8 v6 89 motor in my 85 body. i like the weight, reliability, and the MPG, i want some tips, pointers, some stuff i NEED to know, i really don't know as much as i should when it comes to building a motor, but i got a friend in engine rebuilding, and he knows alotta crap, but only rebuilds, so he can help me put it together.
now what i'm looking for is trying to get around 240 horsepower at the wheels, now it is stock still, and i want to know where to start, i want to try building it without adding a turbo or supercharger if at all possible. I'll add cams, fiddle with intake and exhaust,(want to if at all possible keep the mileage the same) and hope to get some help with this, i don't know what else i could play with, thats where you guys come in, gimme some tips and know how please.
another- links for parts anyone can mention, if you have them, would be appreciated. oh, and also what should i look for in cams?

It would be a good idea to read the stickies at the top of the page, you aren't going to see 240 hp at the wheels let alone the crank with the 2.8. A 3.4 with a turbo would get you there, better yet a hybrid with a turbo. There are quite a few members on the board that can further assist you.

You might be to see 240RWHP on a hybrid without a turbo. But as for your 2.8, you'll need a turbo to get that goal. Just ask some of the guys who have done it, it's not cheap, easy, nor fast. Your car will be down for a little bit. But if you haven't left the V6 camp for a V8, it's still worth it.

so without a turbo or supercharger, you don't think 240 horsepower at the wheels is possible with the 2.8?

Your best bet even getting close to 240 with 2.8 is Nitrous or turbo.

I hope that with that goal in mind, one or the both of you is willing to learn to reprogram the engine computer... It's either that or junk the fuel injection for a carb and still turbocharge it or throw nitrous at it until it blows up.

This should tell you everything you want to know about what you'll need to do to reach that goal:

Re: Wanna Build a 2.8, and build it good.
Read my sticky, 240 on an N/A 2.8 would be pushing it, it could probably be done on a max N/A build with aluminum heads, high compression, high rpms, and ITBs, but it would be expensive, not very streetable and probably not the most reliable.
Your best bet for hitting those #s is to leave your 2.8 stock and turbocharge or boost it, or to build a 3.4 hybrid. Which unless you have fabrication skills and tools would probably cost about the same, in which case I would opt for a hybrid because when you can reach your power goals with a naturally aspirated engine it is generally preferable.

Best bet: leave it stock, graduate college, make decent cash, throw it at your goal.
Don't dink around with it as a daily driver. It will nickel and dime ya, and the results will be disappointing.

Re: Wanna Build a 2.8, and build it good.
If you REALLY want to build up the 2.8 you can get 240hp out of it. I plan on doing a high rpm high compression 2.8 or 3.1 for an S10 at some point and it should be well past that #. Look at the motor in my sig. That's just 9.35 compression.

Re: Wanna Build a 2.8, and build it good.
okay, thanks for the link, and Maverick H1L, by reprogramming it, my room mate here is able to tune computers to turbos and superchargers, would he know what your talking about? if not, i'm at a loss about that, but this is a technical institute i'm at, Wyotech. someone here can help me do that lol.
okay, i'll look into a turbocharger afterall; people say some stuff is meant to match up. so i'm guessing it'd be a good idea for me to look up what matches best as in, cams = turbo = intake = exhaust, should i find out what sets go best together? or is that even really true? it makes sense to me.
- And thank you K-Slice

If he can tune the ECM, you're good. But you will end up swapping to a different ECM anyways and swapping to a different mass air sensor (probably a late-model sensor and a 1227165 ECM) since there really is nothing available for the 1227302 ECM you currently have.

I also kind of agree, if it weren't for all the work my car has needed it wouldn't be half as modded as it is, but many of the modifications I have done were also necessary repairs that I killed 2 birds with one stone on. If I had kept it stock I might actually be driving it atm, but I ran out of money and can't do anything with it till I find a job.

Re: Wanna Build a 2.8, and build it good.
hmm, it is a good point, i will be keeping it stock till i've had a job for a year and i'll make a budget to see what i got money for annually. but i'm going to make a notebook on this topic and put it away for safekeeping, and pull it out with all the info, numbers, names, and items i would need, and all other info i could use.
but still, thanks for the pointers, i've been the best with money out of my siblings and planning ahead is part of that
