Question about the wavy Fuel Gauge

OK, the Fuel Pump is changed. Now i have two questions about the "Wavy, changes every time i come to a stop and drive" gauge:

1) Do i have a "Fuel Pressure Regulator," or what can cause this condition?

2) How do I rectify it?

Thanks.

The needle moves up and down when you hit the brakes or gas? Mine does it also, as did my Dad's 89 RS TBI. I always though it just did that because it was old. Lol.

Re: Question about the wavy Fuel Gauge

Those early camaros had the twin needles on the gas gauge, they like to sway.

At least yours works, mine shows half a tank when its really just empty, before I take it out I have take the gas cap off and shake the car to listen if there's gas I think its my sending unit but I'm waiting till I have enough for a fuel pump and tank so I can just replace that too since the one in there is from a salvage yard.

Re: Question about the wavy Fuel Gauge

if your 84 2.8 is carbureted, it did not come from the factory with a fuel pressure regulator. The 82-92 f car parts book lists regulators for 85 up MPFI motors only. The fuel gauge on my 1988 and my 1991 have done that sinced I've owned them, it's a design flaw and I just never let them get below a quarter tank full.

It likes to go down to like "4" or "2" gallons when it was reading 10 gallons when i come to a hard(er) stop because my tires grip so well i dont want to change them.. then it reads "something higher" when im driving, at speed.

So im STUCK with it this way?

I do believe i will NEVER get my real MPG ad ill thimk i use 4 gallons every 50 miles.

Re: Question about the wavy Fuel Gauge

another reason the gauge moves is because our fuel tanks dont have baffles built in, so the gas sloshes around as you turn a corner or stop/take off. GM didnt put baffles in the fuel tanks till the 4th gens. if you want, you can swap out ur tank for a 4th gen tank, theyre plastic and have baffles.

Re: Question about the wavy Fuel Gauge

Your 84 doesn't have a fuel pressure regulator because the mechanical pump doesn't build enough fuel pressure to warrant needing one, it merely keeps the float chamber in the carb full, as opposed to regulating the pressure behind the power valve and the needles.

Yes, the fuel gauge is weird in our cars. Not only because the fuel tank doesn't have baffles, but because of the shape of the tank altogether. The engine has actually gone through about 2/3 of the fuel in the tank by the time most gauges read half. Most tanks are square-ish. Ours are square-ish at the top and triangular at the bottom, with the hump in the middle for the movement of the rear axle. Another problem is the actual capacity of the tank. I've seen it listed as 10 gallons (BS as I know that I've used 12 gallons on a trip before and the car would have run out of gas if the tank held only 10), 14 gallons, and 16.5 gallons. I don't think anyone will know the actual capacity of our fuel tanks unless one of us actually measures it.
