hey i looked up some old posts and you said that socal auto wrecking had a few 3.4's. you know if they still got em??? i'm racking my brain trying to decide if i want to do this swap.....but it seems SOOOOOOO easy. my car is BEGGING for more power. i thought about a V8 swap but it's unrealistic...i cant find a wrecked TPI 350 so screw it. anyway, where are you located KED85???? how much would i expect to pay this guy????

Well, if you can't decide on whether to do it or not, I'm in the process of doing it myself. You've already heard Ked85's opinion, and hopefully you'll be hearing mine by the end of next week... It does appear that it's worth it... I've been looking at the two motors, and it does seem relatively easy... and keep in mind that I'm only 17 with no mechanical training... I just know a helluva lot about cars.... well, I guess I'm rambling again...

OH IS THIS SWAP WORTH IT!!!

It is VERY DETAILED and VERY EASY.

Ask ANY questions at my email or here. I get better response to you if you email me, tho!

17 & doing this?
EXCELLENT!!!

I'm 44 & did this.
This is my 3rd ever swap & first fully successful.
About bloody time! (or AFT!)

Now, who can tell me how to convert my idiot light dash to gauge package dash I already have (w/85MPH speedo).
I NEED GAUGES!

I do not see why not.
All one has to do is be able to hook back up to the "new" block, ALL the old stuff.
On this 3.4, I got, I left on exhaust manifolds. It had provision for the 3.4 EGR valve.
Low & Behold, the 1985 EGR valve fit perfectly on the newer 3.4 exhaust manifolds.
I'll bet your 3.1 EGR has 2 bolts or nuts holding it onto the passenger side exhaust manifold, right?
Your MAP sensor is just another "tube", in the path of in coming air.
Do not disturb it, leave it attached and work on engine. When the "new" engine is in the engine bay, then start attaching all the old air inlet system, including the MAP.
Does that help ya, get going again?

Dan,
This is easy.
Go get Comp Cam Roller Tip, 1.6 rockers.
Instant HP, atleast 10-20.
Why didn't I do this when I had my chance?
I want to pass smog first. I know of NO ONE that has done this swap in CA and gone for smog test. So, I'll find out for alot of people.
I truly believe I can & will pass, as soon as I put the timing light on it and see where I'm at. I never timed it by light, only by ear & performance.
Cars tend to run better, that way.
make the deal with the wrecking yard, by giving a deposit on your choice of engines.
I was offered a 35K 3.4 engine for sale, too.
That one is just broken in, too, like my 3.4 engine choice was.
