Priming the oil pump

How do you prime the oil pump on a 3.8L with the distibutorless ignition, like on the TTA.

This is how it's done for 2.8/3.1 DIS cars, so hopefully GM did the same thing for the 3.8.

The 3.8 will have an "oil pump drive"- it's the lower half of a distributor. It's got the shaft & gear to connect the camshaft to the oil pump's drive shaft. Like a distributor, it also uses a hold-down-bolt to keep it in the engine. So, you'd use a regular engine oiler, or if you didn't want to pressurize the lifters, you could just use a socket & extension to fit the oil pump's hex drive shaft.

I just need ot lubricate the engine, the car hasn't been started for 2 years and the hasn't got more that like 1000 miles on it since 94 so I think I need to get the engines oil pressure up first before I start it.

Tom has it right,
(You are one smart lad )
Pop off the hood, get off the distributor less unit, insert along screwdriver.
Wait, isn't the oil pump in the front of the engine?
Call this guy, I got his number from Hot Rod mag.
He's real good.

He deals in Buick GN stuff, like the engine you've got.

Hi Kyle,
This guy is very big in the GN circle, similar level as Kenne-Bell.
He has 2 ads in Hot Rod ad section, all year. That does cost money!
He sells all the items you want, buys things, creates HI-Perf parts.
He is a BIG Buick tech head.
You DO have a Buick engine (I saw my first 3.8 back in 1973, in a 1965 Buick Special 2 door post. What is that? I had my 1966 Corvette then, I didn't know everything).
I helped rebuild a 3.8 in a 1980 Firebird. The timing chain cover houses the oil pump, right by the oil filter. The timing chain cover plays major role in oil pressure performance.
May be worth it to just remove that part of the engine, slip on new chain and freshen up the spring pressure.
Check with this guy, tho.
His address is
Poston Ent. 334-368-8577, 206 N. main St. Atmore, AL 36502 Catalog is $20 + $3 shipping. No website.
Go to any mag store, look at his ad in Hot Rod. I see it in the latest issue, pg 129.
You scored great! Hope your car sells for a fair price.
Contact me off line if you want me to write copy for your car to sell on Ebay.
