$500.00 for an 1984 Z28, what do u think?

ok, it has some problems. first, it is not the oringinal 305 and five speed. now it has a 350 attached to a 4 speed. the problem with that is that i dont know where the engine or the tranny are from (what year, model of car). and the four speed is stuck in gear so. needs a carb, altenator belt, battery, paint job and other little things. so for 500 does it sound like a good deal? also do u think it could just be the linkage in the shifter that has it stuck in gear, and is there anyway to tell what kind of car the engine and tranny came out of? i kind of need to know or else i cant go buy any parts for it. other than those problems the body and interior are in good shape. it has a twin turbo hood and ground effects. the interior is a really crappy biege color that is a mix between leather and cloth and the exterior is black. so what do u think? the guy who had it last "said" that the engine and tranny where from a 76 corvette and that he ran a mid 14 with the engine in the z but....... i dont know. help. i will post pics of it later.

All i can say is welcome to the THIRD GEN. FAMILY. For $500.00 that's a bargain. For an additinal mid $2,000 u can resore the beast and make it look great. For example one problem people make is the first price they hear for a part they autotmatically buy it. Ive seen front bumpers for $200.oo and over and i bought one new for $75.00 and fits great. U got to look around and save some money and bring back that 84' camaro. Dont let it go to the salvage yard. Just stick with thirdgen.org and you should have fun with the camaro. Good luck.

... everybody and their brother claims their junkyard 350 or 350 this or that is from a Corvette ... this is often not true ...

If you figure you can fix it up to very good condition for a couple grand then why not.

i would probably buy it, it sounds like a sweet deal. if you can get the vin code off the engine and the tranny then you can look it up and find out what it's from. and about the tranny problem, i work at a tranny shop and it could be any number of problems. It's really hard to say what the exact problem is ,so i would go get it checked out before you buy it because tranny's aren't cheap to fix.

easy fix!
Go get the engine conversion from GM. It costs like $4500 - 5K, but you get a complete new engine & CARB/Smog certification to boot to make it legal!
Is it really a 4 speed car? Not an automatic, converted?
This street legal package is for your engine but automatic. At the moment.
Heck, in the end, you got a new car & great looking car for under 6-7K depending on your bargining skills.

I agree, sounds like a great project. I'll tell you though- rebuild the carb yourself! Is it still the original Rochester E4ME CCC (computer controlled carb)? I have a friend with a G-body with that carb; nobody's rebuilt it correctly for him yet. They're screwing him over, but he won't listen to me- so I gave up on him. ANYway...

There's a book out there called "Rebuilding the Rochester Carberuator", by (I think) Doug Roe, of Roe Books. The books only $20, the rebuild kit's probably $30, and you'll know it's done right.

If the body's in great shape (rust & dents), then that makes the deal all the better! I'd rather do mechanical work than body work any day!

Oh yeah- and I agree with Belker. There's guys here, probably on the History/Restoration board, that could give you casting #'s to check the block for size & year. I doubt it's a 'Vette engine... and if it was, so what? Wasn't the '76 Vette smack in the middle of the over-smogged, poorly performing, low HP years?
