Who else has a 1985 Firebird Y99 & F41 option package?
Who else has a 1985 Firebird Y99 & F41 option package?
Hi All,
I wonder who else has this combination?
I found my build sheet and those were two outstanding codes.
F41 is suspension, which explains my front sway bar being thicker than a 1990 Z-28, by about 2 mm.
But Y99?
What axle ratio may my car have, because of this option? It feels like a 3:42, like in my 1985 S-10 Blazer. My build sheet doesn't say what rear ratio my car has, drat!
I found my build sheet under the driver side rear seat cushion, intact.

You've got 3.42 rear gearing, there was no option on this one for your year.

I also have a 1985 firebird with Y99 and F41 together. I don't see what's so special about this combo, but I have it anyway, to answer your question! My axle is also a 3.42:1 like yours.

Chatting with many on this board, no one else has two suspension/sales packages, together, on their vehicle or body build sheet, as I have located on mine.
It seems to be an unusal combination.
Special?
I LOVE IT!!
Lighter weight vehicle (V-6 instead of a heavier V-8) with a Z-28/WS-6 suspension package. Measured against a 1990 Z-28, my front sway bar is actually thicker!
My Firebird is extremely responsive on the road & the curves above LA and along the Pacific coast.
Kizz, did you "create" (you have the stick, so you have the code typed in for that option) your optioned package list, or did you locate the body build sheet?
I was able to locate my body build sheet, under the driver side, back seat.
You have a Van Nuys, CA plant built car and you're on the east coast????
Did you know this?

Yeah, I'm aware the car was made in Van Nuys, and I'm in NC. Why do you find that so amazing? There were only 2 manufacturing plants supplying the whole country, so cars from both plants are everywhere.
And as far as the V6 F41 combo, yeah it's definitely cool to have the upgraded handling on a V6, but.. what does Y99 have to do with any of that? I don't even know what Y99 is, other than "Y99 : SALES, HANDLING PKG". You know, some of those descriptions are wrong, and I think Y99 is one of them. I doubt it has anything to do with hardware on the car.
To answer your other question, I have not found the build sheet yet. I was looking just today, actually (took the drivers seat out). I got all my codes from the RPO sticker in the center console.

Your location is so close Norwood, 9 times outta 10, the east cars come from there. As with the west coast, 9 times outta 10, the cars will be from Van Nuys.
I happen to own a 1967 RS/SS Camaro. I do know the history of the car, having met the previous owner in 1987, and the seller, when I got it in 1984 (this guys cousin). It's life started in the Philly area (actually rescued from a Philly wrecking yard and drag raced by the original owner) and it came cross country in 1984.
Anyway, I've only seen 1 other Norwood Camaro out here, in LA area (long time frame from 1984 to present, my Wife's 1968 Camaro is a Van Nuys car, as was probably my 1968 Firebird 400/TH400, I owned back in 1981-82).
This other guys Camaro was built 3 weeks prior to mine (March 1967) and had the same assembly line variances as mine (I have a "correct" Big Block Tach, in a "correct" small block car, as this guy did). The first year cars, had lots of "correct" items installed.
You do have the 15" Pinwheel styled mags, correct?
I never understood the term, sales/handling package Y99, either. F41, I sure do. I knew of that back in the 60's.
You have a console build sheet?
My 1985 Firebird does not. Yet, I've seen the 80's era Camaros, having them. Incidentally, I took a Camaro console lid sticker, just to have, for comparison.
No, my console lid cover was not changed.
Just some of the strange things you find out about a car.
I honestly think you are the only other one to say you have this combo. And yours is a stick car. Mine's an auto. No gauges (YET!! SOON!!)
Your stick car must be a blast to drive!
Checked your stats again, a Van Nuys car, destined for the other 49 states. Do you know if previous ownership was from a western state?
Shipping, even for a giant like GM is not exactly cheap.
Your VIN is after mine by 7,000+ previous cars.
I found my sheet, again, under the pass seat bottom, driver side. Happy hunting!
Wish I had that center lid console sheet, too!

Your posting kind of bothers me, so I'll reply to it.
Sorry, but you're wrong. Do you keep track of car VIN's so you can see where they were built and where they are now? I do. Here is a sample of my 1982 database:

not sure which you mean, but I replaced mine with 1982 Trans Am "turbo fin" wheels a while back. Here's a pic: http://indiemonkey.com/82recaro/kizzsfb.jpg
No such thing exists. I know what you're trying to get at though, and I already answered you previously: I found my RPO sticker inside the middle console. I have not found my build sheet yet.
Uh, it seems like you have a one track mind! My Van Nuys car was bought NEW right here in the same town where I live in North Carolina. You want the name of the dealership? "Harry's On The Hill", Harry's Cadillac/Pontiac/GMC Truck, Asheville, NC. I bet you are amazed, like you were before.
I agree with that, but as you can see, a Van Nuys car can be sold new anywhere, and a Norwood car can be sold new anywhere, too. NC is as far from Van Nuys as it gets, yet my car was sold new here.
passenger's seat, driver's side? What special edition is that!? Again, I know what you're trying to say, because I saw your post before on a build sheet thread where you said it was under the driver's side rear seat cushion. But you're getting your words mixed up, and causing confusion.
see what I mean? There is no such thing as a "center lid console sheet". It's called the RPO sheet or RPO sticker, and it is inside the center console, not on the lid.

Thanks for clearing some things up.
How did you find out/assemble that list of cars built at the plants and the dealer destinations?
Not amazed, just knowing how the giant shipping dept at GM, likes to try to save as much money as possible.
I've read several stories about where GM cars are built and how they end up moving around the country.
The Chevelles were built at several plants all around the nation. Same with the Impalas, Bel Air and large Chevys.
Yet, most people know Corvettes are built at only one plant and they are all over the nation.
You may also find a build sheet inside one of the doors.
Go to a toy store and look at the design of a pinwheel. That is what I am referring to about the 15" wheels I have on mine. I've seen the same design on the 16" wheels used on some Firebirds also. I do not know what GM called them, as I do not have the sales brochure from a 1985 Firebird for exact terms nor codes.
Sorry if I'm not clear on every exact term and such.
For me, it's just a car.
Thanks for taking your time to respond.

That could have been done nicer, but oh well.
Just to throw it out, my old bird was Van Nuys (so's the Formula, actually), and I know for a fact it was baought in Florida brand new. Noone ever accused GM of being smart. Heck, look at where the fuel pumps are located ::grumble::.

Hey Reno.
Yeah.
But, oh well.
Sometimes, it's an attitude that amazes me.
IF GM WAS SMART, they would figure out how to remarket the Firebird/Camaro to reach a broader range of potential purchasers.
Ford did very well, doing that, to the Mustang.
IF GM WAS SMART, they would have dumped the ad agency for Oldsmobile and remarketed that established brand name, also.
Ford, also, did very well, doing that with Mercury, too. I'm still awaiting to see that remarketing result, with the Lincoln car line.
It costs many millions (and many years) to establish a brand name, as well known as Oldsmobile.
The battles between the design engineers and bean counters is always an interesting observation from us, that have to repair a car.
I still curse the engineer, that designed the heater system on the BMW 2002. He was a fkng idiot!

Just for trivia, if you look back up at my 1982 "database" and you see the listing that says "Gardner, MA", that's car #500003. The VIN is 1G2AS8712CL500003. It's the earliest 3rd gen VIN I have found so far! Its most recent record of mileage is 115001 in early '96, so it's been driven a while.. if it was me I'd have worshiped it just for having the 3rd ever 3rdgen VIN. 500001 and 500002 do not appear in CarFax at all; I have tried all 24 combinations per VIN. They were either destroyed early by GM or are sitting in some barn / warehouse / museum / personal collection with super duper low miles, maybe that's why they don't have any activity history.

The thing you have just pointed out, Kizz, is something, several on this forum and it seems, soon, many others know, is that the 3rd Gen F-bodies, are destined to become classics. Ask Kyle about his recent score the 20th Aniversary Trans Am, his 1989.
RIGHT NOW, they are affordable classics.
So digging up info (as you were great to provide, your collection of the RPO codes), about the unique combos, is just part of the fun and the chase.
For the Corvette crowd (I've been part of that since 1972), that's a part of their life. Sometimes, they should get a life!
YET, I have traced every owner of my current 1974. Even spoke to the original buyer, owner number 10 & 11. I am owner #12. Why not? It was fun to find out how it became, what it is, in my current posession.
For the First gen F-Body crowd (I've been part of that since 1984), it didn't seem to matter.
Except, now, it's also a way to make more money for reselling their classic.
Me? I won't part with my 1967 nor the 1968 (that's now my Wife's and is destined for my 8 month old Son), no matter that she wants a mminivan (yeech!).
And I do not want to part with my 1985, either. I really enjoy this ride I created. Especially, when it is a unique combo of RPO codes. Just makes it more fun!
Especially thru the Canyons around LA.
That would be an especially interesting chase, to discover those F-body 0001 & 0002 that you mentioned.
I wonder if that owner of 0003 knows what they have? Or is it just another ride?
Does anyone think that Hondas or Toyotas will be respected for their heritage, one day?
I wonder how VW's got their respect? Please, tho, don't answer THAT question.
