Slipping tranny? Anyone experienced similar?

I've asked about this in the transmissions forum previously but want to hear from people who have had similar trouble intheir V6....

I was test driving a cheap V6 the other day and the only thing that was wrong with it was the tranny slipping.
When you put the car into drive it wouldn't pull away. It would just rev like it was in neutral or park. However, when you put it into 1st it would pull away. If you shifted it into 2nd it would continue to accelerate to the point that you could shift it into drive. However, if you shifted from first into drive it would just rev. Kickdown also won't work. It will just rev instead of doing anything.

Why can it accelerate when you shift it manually but not by itself? Does anyone know what the problem could be and would it be expensive to fix?

Any experienced similar on a 2.8 V6 Camaro with 700R4 tranny?

Thanks for the help!

Gordon

well I have never had the problem with a chevy but with a ford van but the best thing to do with that transmission is just change it out with a remanufatured transmission. About 800 bucksif you order it from Phoenix Arizonia with exchange and then it's like having a whole new transmission, and no I don't think thats a simple problem to fix.

Alot of things it "could" be.
Maybe as simple as adjusting the TVC cable. Or even the shifter cable may need adjustment.
But, if you're not sure, spend the few $$ for a tranny inspection. Go to several shops for comparison of answers, if ya can.

How's the fluid level? When my torque convertor exploded, the car wouldn't move; just "rev" in drive... rev it high enough, and it would inch forward. Then i smelled the trans fluid & shut it down...

Not sure what exactly's wrong with it, maybe I'll go over my books. BUT- When the shifter is manually put into 1st or 2nd, line pressure (tranny's internal fluid pressure) becomes almost double that of normal. It could be that the trans needs that extra pressure to shift.

I'd avoid the car. It might be an easy fix (shift cable adjustment, low on fluid, etc), but who knows how long it's been driven in this bad condition- the trans could be screwed up, and blow up after the "easy fix". You're looking at almost $1000 for a shop to swap trannies, and a lot of work if you do it yourself.

Thanks guys!

The fluid has just been changed.

I agree though that the car it might be best avoided! From the replies it's looking as though it'd need a full new transmission. And to be honest the money I would save on buying the car I would end up spending more than that to get everything fixed.

Pity though, perhaps the next one I look at will be better!
