A MAJOR TUNEUP. That's it; end of story. With your engine running at it's "original factory level", you'll get your mileage AND horsepower back.
I don't understand why nobody believes me on this. You want better gas mileage? Major Tuneup. You want more horsepower, then START with the major tuneup.
I guess a tuneup isn't "glorious" or "exciting" enough, eh? Sounds much cooler to say "I put a 4 barrel carb on" than "I did a tuneup". I suppose thats why all the old Mustangs I see pour black smoke out the tailpipes, and sound like they're misfiring- and that's probably why I would beat them when I used to street race.

Yup. Keep er' tuned up.
Used to have an '84 Camaro Sport Coupe that got over 40mpg back in Indiana. I made sure that thing was running perfectly, because I was too poor to afford a new car. The side effect was it got AWESOME mileage.
Completely, and disgustingly, stock. :-)

When you do your tune up don't forget the charcoal canaster filter..It seems that filter is almost always missed during a tune up.

What needs be done to that charchol canister?
I'm rebuilding my 2bbl on my S-10 Blazer (same engine & such).
Finally got the damn carb off, now the distributor is stuck so I cannot remove the intake, yet.
Heads are next (using the "quick rebuilt" 2.8/3.1/3.4 MPFI heads on my Blazer)
Wish I could afford a new cam & lifters.

Hey Sammy, I'm rebuild ing my 2.8 carb this week.
I'll let ya know what it's like.
I have about 125,000 since last carb overhaul.
Also doing throttle shaft bushings, too.
Just rebuilt distributor today.
EASY!!!!
This is on my 1985 S-10 Blazer 2.8, same as yours.
Wish I had the extra for timing chain & new cam/lifters. I can do that later, after I get another short block. Want a 3.4 short block. Maybe a FWD one, this time, to swap the starter parts onto. I have access to drills for that.

I found out that some canisters have that filter; some are sealed on the bottom. That's not really a tuneup part though; it should be checked every now and then.
I'll bet you guys (with non-electronic EGR's) didn't know there's an EGR filter! On the end of the EGR solenoid, there's a filter that's supposed to be replaced every 25,000 miles. Good luck finding that part, though. The filter is on the side of the solenoid opposite the vacuum lines. Look closely at the solenoid, you'll see that the end is really a removable "can". The filter's part of (and inside) that can.
