governer
k all. got a question, and its not about removing the governer, persay, but does pertain to the governer.
I was driving down Hwy. 370 (3.1firebird might know where that is) and ahead of me is this 80's looking vette (the same style used till the mid 90's...but it was this metalic gray paint, that looked very 80's) well, anyway, the dude was ahead of me, and i told my friend in the pass. seat, lets have some fun, well, we pull up next to the vette, andthe vette stomped the gas, and takes off. Well, he later slowed down, so i could catch up, then he graciously accelerated, but only enough to match my speed (he didnt run away) so, i was in 3rd gear, with the pedal floored, and i new it wouldn't shift up to 4th by itself (i had it locked in third, and idon'tthink my shift kit compensates for the 3-4 shift anyway) but the car got faster and faster, then the RPM's wouldn't go any higher. I was stuck at 4900 rpms with the pedal floored, and wasn't going any faster. So, my question, is was that the speed limiter ? and can u reach 115 in 3rd gear, i know 1st ends at 40mph, 2nd at 70-75mph, so would or could 3rd last to 115, if so, then this week the governer comes off. Or, is this a problem where i just don't have the power to make the engine redline in 3rd. I thought i shoul be able to reline in any gear. TIA

Outta curosity,
what speedometer do you have that reads past 85mph?
I have an 85 Firebird too (can't wait to get rid of my governor in 2002!) and I agree about the top speed estimate.
Haven't been there yet, because I need new tires.

just your typical 85 mph spedometer, that why i was wondering if 3rd gear could push 115mph (that's where the governer's supposed to kick in I think). And if so, that'd be why my engine wouldn't rev any higher. I'll give it another try, and see how high i can get third up to again. But the needle was more than burried, it was at about the 95 point, and wouldn't go any farther, (the same place it always go when really, really floored.)

Was the speedometer ever so slightly creeping upward, or was it perfectly still, or going kind of back & forth. When I hit the speed limiter in my Maxima (125 mph) the speedometer would go back & forth between about 124 & 127. You could definately tell the governor was stepping in.

my camaro's govenor just cuts power to the engine at 115MPH.
i am guessing it is 115 though cuz the speedo only goes to 110 but everyone says the guv is at 115
i don't really feel anything like it stepping in
i did 110 today and i was at around 4 grand in 5th gear (at 110 MPH)
sorry i dont know the exact RPM (its kinda hard to take a good look when going that fast
)
dont know if this helps, but........

I used to have an '84 Camaro sport coupe that had the 700R4 and 3.23 gears. I had it maxed out once on I-65 in Indiana, pacing another car. I was told that the max I did was around 115mph - 120mph, and that was the point where the car wouldn't want to stay in 4th gear.
