governer and shift points?
governer and shift points?
This question is about the th-350 in my monte carlo. I noticed that B&M has a governer recalibration kit to fine tune wot shift point...it comes w/ replacement springs and such of varying weights to change the shift points.
my question is...will the shift points change with engine load....say from normal n/a use to using a shot of nitrous?
Im asking this b/c id like to keep the bench seat/column shift granny look to the car and be able to just leave it and drive and let the tranny do the rest...not the most exciting to drive that way but this is more for the sleeper look and not haveing to worry about overshifting the column into nuetral or worse, reverse.
any insight here?

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I don't think the governor has anything to do with part throttle shifts. It only controls WOT shifts. At least this is what I noticed when I installed the kit in my Blazer. The part throttle shifts were normal, but my WOT shifts went from 4,500 - 5,500, which is exactly what I wanted to do.

Oh I got that. The kit will work fine then.
The N20 vs NA shifts may varry, because the N20 may make the governor weights move out faster and therefore cause it to shift earlier. You will haev to experiment with it a bit to get it dialed in just right. Weights make big changes, springs small ones.
I like the sleeper image. What kind of car is it? Malibu?

car is just a plain black non-ss 83 monte carlo...stock hood, burgundy bench seat interior..no t-tops
its just got a lil ol 305 in there for now that im just gonna keep spraying untill it decides to quit.
i guess ill tune the shift points for when im spraying and live w/ the difference w/ im n/a

NA or Nitrous, at WOT there will be no change. The shifts themselves might take longer, because of the increased torque. A Trans-Go Performance Shift will help here if you do not already have one installed.

I bow to Pro-Built's expertise. He would know better than I. I just made an assumption based on how the governor reacts with different converters and rear gears. I thought N20 may have a similar effect, but I guess I was wrong.

I know you said you aren't concerned about part-throttle but...
FYI the weights and springs DO affect part throttle.
Short story - A shop tried to get the shift points I wanted with the kit but could not succeed because everytime they changed the 1/2 combo, the 3/4 shift would change, and bice versa. They tried about 30 times!
Sooo... they did the next best thing and installed a stock setup with very early WOT shifts. I can prolong the shifts manually when I want to race (or accelerate faster at part throttle). At WOT in D my tranny is shifting at 4500RPM. At part throttle it shifts at 2000RPM. Before, the part throttle shifts were much later. Be careful, you might make changes to part thottle shifting that will ANNOY you later on.

Sounds like that shop didn't know what they were doing. If you are still having different RPMs for the 1-2 and 2-3/3-4 shifts they didn't do their job. There is a whole thread devoted to correcting this problem.
My part throttle shifts are stock, or at least seem to be (not enough of an RPM incrase for me to notice), but my WOT shifts are at 5,500, right where I want them. This prevents me from having to manually shift on the column, which I feel is dangerous.
I also have a B&M shift kit, and B&M 4th gear sleeve, along with the governor that I recalibrated using their kit. The shift kit may be partially responsible for the way the truck shifts.

I trust this shop. It has a polished reputation for building transmissions. Everyone in Las Vegas F-Body Association loves the trannys he builds.
I would normally assume the shop is dumb too - but this guy is certainly not. He said that it might be from work done to the transmission earlier. I had it rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago. He said that the transgo shift kit (which he likes and uses) may be the trouble. He questions the the rebuild. I think he is right, because he tried FOREVER for me to get the shift points. Also, the shop I dealt with on the rebuild was shady with me.
Ah well... i like shifting manually

Yeah, could be. Pro-Built is really the guy to ask. He'd know what would cause that.

My transmission is not th350 - it is 700r4.
I wanted 5000RPM WOT shifts, with pretty normal PT shifts.
However, my guy I use said he suspects something with the valvebody is inhibiting the normal ease of this adjustment.
The transmission was rebuilt a about 15,000 miles ago. I suspect that rebuild too, because even tho the tranny is stout it is wierd and worries me. It shifts HARD at low throttle (clank!), and when put into drive from park/neutral it engages hard (clank!). Doesn't seem like it should do that...
