3.1 Firebird knows what he's talking about. No stock 2.8/3.1 could dream of 16 flat. Try 17.6 @ 82 MPH...that's what Motor Trend got in '87 with a 5 speed RS.
Carbed 2.8s were indeed in the 18s somewhere....

*****,
I could name or list at least 10 things to look for as to why your car is running so slow but where to start? You first must consider that asuming your car is in top shape having a complete and recent tune-up, is the problem caused by track/weather/pilot conditions or something mechanical? If it's completely stock, it's up to these 4 elements to influence the times you'll get.
How did you come off the line? Are you running a brake or just mashing the peddle? Was the weather hot? Are you spinning the tires too much? Are you shifting or letting the trans do it?

Ovrclck - What mods have you done out of curiosity?
I have a nicely running engine (rebuilt 2.8), flowmaster exhaust, K&N, decent tires and lotsa decals (haha). Any chance I can make it under 17? Thanks.

Let me see..if my understanding was right...torque is the force that propels you, HP is the force that lets u get up to the peak torque (is that right?) so you would have more torque, and HP.. a couple of f-body friends i talk 2 say they wouldnt be surprised if i have 200-210 tq because of how fast i accelerate

I had a STOCK (and I mean it in every aspect of the car) 1984 Camaro sport coupe that had the carb'd 2.8L V6, 700R4 and 3.23 gears. Ran a 17.78@81mph quarter mile.
Just so you guys have a reference number.

Well, here's my mod list below. I can get into the 16's...but i made a stupid mistake I won't go into at the track. The BEST I've Gteched is a 16.4, but mainly most were 16.6-16.8's.

Re: 1/4 mile times of a stock V6?
I have a '84 Chevy 2.8L Carb with 700r4 in an S-10, I've timed it at "16.1". That's with the emission/ A.I.R. system remove, with FlowMaster 40 series, straight pipe,rebulit distributor and K&N filter!

yea this thread is old... but whoever wrote that a stock 3.1L rs would run low 16s is crazy mine ran 17.3's and that was when this thread started and my car only had 33k on it... now it has 104k. and a few mods and runs 16.6s' constantly...

There must be something wrong with the way the forum's set up. When I do a search I rarely see anything older than 5yrs. Now all of a sudden everyone's going for a walk through cemetaries.

Re: 1/4 mile times of a stock V6?
Eh screw it, I'll bring it back, AGAIN! My 83 2.8 would be lucky to do a 1/4 mile in 25 seconds... its a total D.O.G., but it hasn't exactly been taken care of either.. mine is a piece of junk.. for now..
