Vacuum Advance Distributor

I was at Highway Auto Parts in RI to day and I found and bought a Vacuum Advance Distributor off of a 2.8L S10 With a Carb, It's the same motor thats in my 83 Firebird.
I wanted to know if this was a wise buy? I think it was a good buy because I am going to buy the aftermaket Edelbrock Intake with the 4BBL. adapter, Its a non-EGR Intake and I think that distributor is what I need, What do you think??

Rob,
It is EXACTLY WHAT YA NEED AND IT'S THE SAME AS A CHEVY V-8 HEI unit one!
Honest, don't waste your money on the Edlebrock thing UNLESS YOU WANT A 390 CFM 4 BBL.
The 390 is the size you can use and get away with. Any other size is way to big.
BUT for the $350+ the Holley costs, plus the $300 you'd pay for the intake and adaptor & the proper adaptor you'd need (the 2-BBL), just rebuild the distrB and rebuild the carb, slap it on and enjoy the performance increase and the MONEY SAVED!
You could even send me out your carb & I'd get the base plate bushed for ya for a slight fee.
BUT, keep it stock, save the bucks. You'll be pleased in the end.
You can do things to your car, but, that's so OD for the $$$$$$$$$ investment.
Buy an old FireAm, instead!
Serious, don't waste the bucks.
Go get some MPFI Heads, and a better cam from a 2.8/3.1 MPFI car and rebuild what ya got and have some cheap fun! Only then ya need to replace timing chain and new lifters. Max investment may be $200, if that much and ya get a very decent boost in seat of pants performance!.
Once my oil pump is changed, I'll know for sure.
My S-10 needs another pump. AND I did not do a MPFI cam change (it was $75+ new chain, a not right now, investment). I want to swap out bottom end for that mission. My S-10 has 211,500 miles on the bottom end. Yea, it could use freshening up down there!

Yeah, Rob, chances are good if you rebuild your distributor, you'll do much better. Now, if your car has a computer in it, and you're moving to a carb that's not meant for a computer, you'll need a vacuum advance carb. But to save money (and increase performance!), you could probably grab one from a junkyard car and rebuild it with MSD or Holley ignition parts. I doubt that Highway Auto Parts store will have aftermarket ignition pieces in it!

The only thing I didn't get off that engine was the ignition Coil.

Sure!
BUT, it's easier to just use the one on the carb in the back. That's what I did for about 100,000 miles. Worked way better than the hokey route that is emission related.
Just use the one on the carb base plate in the back, use a fresh hose.
IF YA REALLY WANT FUN, go get an Accel adjustable vacuum advance. That will fit this instance, too!
I almost used mine, that I'm saving for my 1974 Corvette Accel 300+ CDI ignition modification system, but.....

Have ya rebuilt the carb yet?

the carb hasn't been rebuilt yet, I need to get it done, because i got a gasket leak. How long does it take to rebuild one, is there any chance i will mess it up?
