3.1l turbo questions///

Ok i am very serious about putting a turbo on my car but can only buy some stuff at a time... ya know.. like buy the turbo one week then in a few weeks buy the piping and so forth. Ok well are one of the ebay turbos I have Linked on this page a decent turbo to buy? Im not sure which is better. Such as an internal wastegate or external. Also, I only wish to get this 3.1L it like 230-250Hp at most. Car has 106K on it. Any advice on turbo sizes and such is greatly appreciated! Hell with the nitrous! I was going to do that but for just a little more $$ and time and effort I know I can get at turbo on my car succesfully!

Here are a few Ebay ones...

stock injectors?stock engine? 19# injectors are only good for about 190 flywheel hp on a turbo motor

Funny, I got 230 WHP from my 19 lbs/hr injectors. That's about 250 CHP.

I will agree that I was running that at or beyond 100% DC, but they worked for me for over 2 years.

i have the stock engine. stock injectors.. there 19# right?? So what should i look for size wise. Like #22 or #24??? Do you think the stock fuel pump will be ok with the larger injectors?? If it matters i just replaced it one year ago. Thanks again for the help!!!

granted they will support more then 190 and i have o issues running an injector to 95/100% dc , but its always nice to leave some room for an overboost situation etc

stock fuel pump will support over 300 crank so its fine, boost is addictive and u will always end up wanting more out of ur setup.
on pilsburys car we installed 48# injectors.
i would go for a set of 32/34# injectors, ur going to have to tune the car anyway might as well leave ur self room to grow. if u look around on ebay or even most aftermarket places 32/34's will cost only slightly more then 24's

ok ill look at the #32 or #34 injectors then... I bought the turbo that you linked, a few mins ago! Ill be here in a few days but ill have to wait till next friday to buy more..slowly but surely ill have it all. Are the injectors diffenent in different cars? Or can i just look for #32 injectors? Oh ya Im going to do everything myself but the to tune my comp. so what it a fair rate for someone to do the tune for me? Thanks again!

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

Yes there are different types of injectors.

You will want O-ring style injectors, 14mm IIRC. You could also use "Multec 1 style." Pretty much anything that will fit in a 5.0L Mustang, TPI F-body, and a few other cars will work.

ur best bet is to learn the tunning software and buy ur own chip burner so ur not waiting on mail order tunes.

if it was me id be doing a ms1 v2.2 for 311 bucks or a ms 1 v3 for slightly mmore

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

There is a place called Busher Racing near where I live an Im sure they tune cars. Ill call them since there only 10 miles away. Im on a tight budget and I will look into burning my own programs once i can afford the $$ for the system. Ill look into the tuning part on thirdgen.org and see what i can learn. Im a total beginner when it comes to comps. on cars. Im use to working on cars without them.

that is the megasquirt unit u just plug in ur laptop make the changes u want and save them, no burning chips at all

if u buy the kit that u have to solder urself its not that bad but the extra 100 bucks to buy one preassembled and tested is well worth the money spent

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

ok thanks again for the link... my turbo should be here by friday but itll be about a month before i get every thing together for the project... i read some more and i think i understand how to tune the car. The last question about the turbo is what is the best route for the inlet exhaust on the turbo and the down pipe? SOme pictures are hard to see what really was done. Would it be easiest to make a log type header for the inlet exhaust then just run the down pipe into the y collector>>

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

look at the header design i did on pilsburys car thats going to be the best and simplest way to do it.

just build the log on the passenger side and reuse the stock manifld on the driver side and make ur own crossover pipe to cnnect the 2

the downpipe will just go out to the factory cat location were u would be unbolting the stock y pipe

For info on tuning the stock ECM, or other GM ECMs that might be more suitable (The 1227730/1227749 comes to mind running code $58 or code $59), check the DIY PROM forum on this site.

am i going to need a 2 bar MAP sensor for the turbo too??/ I heard that I may need one but i dont know if the guy knows what hes talking about.
Depends on what ECM and/or code you are using.

Some code will only use a 1 BAR, but wouldn't be very turbo friendly, and other parts would have to be used to add the proper amount of fuel and control timing.

Some code uses a 2 BAR MAP, such as code $58 (Syclone/Typhoon/Turbo Sunbird), code $8F (Turbo Grand Prix).

Some code uses a 3 BAR, such as code $59, which is an updated and modified version of code $58. (www.code59.org)

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

word of advice take the turbine and compressor housings off and blow them out or wash them in hot soapy water, if u wash the turbine housing spray it with some hi temp grill paint so it dont rust up on u.

the only bad thing i found with mine was some metal shavings from when they tappedthe holes for the downpipe flange

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

6 blade.. its a .50 compressor/.63 turbine.. ill put pics on this weekend when im playing in the garage. Im hoping this can give me 220hp or so at a low psi. like 7-8psi. Since its a smaller turbo won't it spool up faster???

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

ahh ok u bought a different turbo, its a 48 trim t3/t4 they work pretty well on the v6
that design of the turbo spools up better then the one i originally used on my car, pilsbury has the same turbo minus the antisurge housing. the antisurge will make it spool a tiny bit slower but its a good turbo

Re: 3.1l turbo questions///

heya pils that 88$ turbo i posted up earlier in this thread is a cheap but good upgrade to the turbo u have, besides allowing for more max hp its also more efficent. its also a bolt in replacement for the one u have

turbo u have now measures 49/50mm the 88$ one = 57mm

I'm a long way out from getting an upgrade. I actually don't see the car moving out of garage this year
