Defferential's guts
ok, i've already had my rearend replaced so i kept the old one so i could stick some new gears in it and convert it to disc, the first problem i have already run into is getting the damn old gears out, good thing i replaced it when i did(looks like i didnt have to invest in a second opinion after all Karl) when i took the differential cover off and drained the oil out of it i noticed there where big chunks of teeth missing off the gears, and i found seven or eight of them in the bottom of the drain pan, the problem i am having is getting the gears out of the damn thing, i've already takin off the bolt from the driveshaft end and it seems like the thing is connected all the way through, does anybody know how to remove these gears i'd really appreciate it. TIA

Yu take the bolt out to remove the shaft.
Rotate unit until you see the bolt.
NOW, push in the axles, 1 ata time, you see the "C" clip, remove with a magnet! Axle slides out.
BUT setting up the other gears, take tools & talent.
That detail is up to others.

A magnet? Damn, good idea! When I rebuilt my axle, I was trying needle-nose pliers!
The axles (aka "axleshafts") are the things that the wheel bolts onto; they extend into the axle housing, and meet at the differential (open or posi). There's a little bolt (8mm I think?) that holds in a lock-pin... you remove the lock pin, and the axleshafts slide out of the differential a bit. Then you pull the c-clips out, and then pull the axleshafts out. While they're out, it's a good time to replace the axleshaft bearings & seals. Are you doing the gears yourself?

Don't laugh & the gears may be noisy, but 4 cylinder S-10 Trucks.
Same thing.
I got my education from news stand magazines. I have several dozen articles. & Pictures.
Go to a book store & check out the Hot Rod book section. May find a book about rear axles, there.
Library, too!
On-line, there's got to be some info to assist ya!!
Or go to a garage and ask.

My 82-92 Haynes book tells how to remove the axleshafts, and replace/install the rear axleshaft bearings & seals, and change the rear fluid, and change the rear brake hoses/e-brake cables.
Summit Racing sells a video, by Richmond, on how to set up gears. They also sell an installation kit, with gaskets, shims, marking paint, etc. You'll need a dial indicator & stand, and I believe you need a special torque wrench, too. Be careful with the gear set-up; if it's not done properly, you can destroy the gears with one drive. It's not a "pull-old-install-new" swap.
As per Karl's advice, if the truck has "GT4" on the options sheet in the glovebox, that means 3.73 gears. You can get new gears for $200, so if the junkyard wants $150, tell them what they can do with the gears.
