TIming

Ok well this weekend project went better then expected. I picked up a couple front seats $100 and a local scrap yard. no rips!!! Only prob is they are tan my old ones were black and grey, but I have seat covers. Removal and instalations was a breze. Total of four bolts in and out in 2 hours ( i stoped for lunch on the way home).

Now on to next weekends project. Fuel filter, replacing my dent and slightly torn cat, and check and readjust timing.

My car smells like it running a little rich. I can smell gas when even the car just sitting there. At a stop light, stop sign, traffic, etc. Would this becuase caused by tiuming adjustment? What is the timing supposed to be set at? my Haynes and Chiltons manule says to check the emission system lable under the hood. Problem is I don't have the lable.

Also i know there is a wire I need to disconect under the car inorder to replace the fuel filter, but I not sure ware it is at. My two manules are starting to get useless and not showing ware the conection is.

every car has an "emmisions" Lable. It should be located on you fan shroud, it tells you spark plug gap, timing, and idel speeds...ect. you have to have one, or you have a prob.

has to how to set timing other then turning the dist. i know there is something you have to disconnect but i don't know the name of it, the other guys will fill you in.

You need to disconnect the EST connector, its the only exposed plug on the main wiring harness closest to the cowl. Its just a single wire with a weatherpak connector. Pick up a GM manual for your car and you'll be ahead of the game. If you have a 3.1 I can take a picture of the emissions lable in my car.

If you have the time to take snap shot of the lable that would be great. I looked all over the place for it and the only lable I found was the one for the serpitine belt setup. No spark timing and all of that fun stuff.

i knew I had to disconect the EST. I was refering to the wire that you need to disconnect in order to depresurize the fuel lines so I can change the fuel filter. The haynes manule just states that it is under the car in the back. Well I found a couple of those not sure which one.

i think the GM manule will be the way to go for now on. These third party books have good basic information, but anything beyound that and they are no good.

Thanks to both of you for your replys!!

The label is on the hood, under to the left of the latch. YOUR timing should be 10 degrees advanced in DRIVE I think.

The connector you're looking for is on the body directly in front of the differential. It should have a white safety clip, pull it out and it unplugs like any other weatherpak connector.

I'll snag a pic of the label tomorrow.

Not sure about Drew, but my EST connector is located under the hood. If you're looking at the motor from the front, it'll be against the firewall to the left, sorta near the AC canister. It's a brown wires with yellow stripe. Payce.

BitchinRS said "I was refering to the wire that you need to disconnect in order to depresurize the fuel lines so I can change the fuel filter."
So I gave him the correct answer.

Removing the gas cap depressurizes the fuel tank, not the fuel lines. The fuel filter is in the lines, for that reason to depressurize the lines you need to either press the schrader valve on the fuel rail, in which case you'll have gas all over the intake manifold, or you can disable the fuel pump and run the engine to evacuate the lines. The quickest easiest way to disable the fuel pump is to unplug it. Since you're under the car anyway changing the pump it takes about 15 seconds to unplug it.

Cool I look forward to the Picture. The only reason I think of as to why I don't have the lable is that the car was in a nasty frontal accident a couple of years ago. Now you can't tell except for the fact that the hood sits a little too low. Ohh and all the rattling from the right front end, the front needs a rebuild! Apprently when they put the front end back together they never put a new lable on the hood or the radiator cowl.

My thanks goes to every one who replyed. with this information I should be able to get this all completed on Saturday afternoon.

If you took the partnumber on the 4th pic to a GM dealership they could probably order a new lable for you.

the fun way to replace the fuel filter of course is to just get in there with a can and catch what comes out... then you can burn it
