Power Loss Adding 2030 Cam HELP!!!!
Power Loss Adding 2030 Cam HELP!!!!
I have a 1992 3.1 automatic firebird with 51,000 summer miles. Stage one of my modifications were as follows: hypertech thermo chip, home made K&N cold air, MSD 6A ignition, Jet power pulleys, and a dynomax exhuast. With all of that I was able to beat my brothers 92 RS 5.0 TBI automatic with only 46,000 summer miles.Then I wanted more so I put Cranes 2030 cam, and 1.52 roller rockers by comp cams. I let the cam break in and then I raced my brother. I LOST!!!! How can this happen, please tell me that something can be adjusted I need answers I really would appreciate some help. I spent 2,000 bones to go slower. My friends, take it from some one who put the cam in, dont do it!!
Thats really odd. Did you pull the motor out to do the swap? You might have broken some vacumm lines in the process. Also, make sure you reset the comp and drive around to get it used to it.
Most guys on this board who've done the cam hit about a second faster than those who havnt.

I assume you put the cam sprocket "straight up"; and didn't retard or advance valve timing? Did you use a new timing chain? Did you give the rockers the proper preload (set lifters to zero lash, then add a 90 degree turn to the rocker arm nut)? Are you letting the trans shift on it's own, and if you are, what RPM does the trans shift at?
Did you re-use all the upper intake gaskets, and injector o-rings, or did you replace with new? Did you reset the TV cable? What is your ignition timing set to? How's the fuel pressure?
Does the car feel more powerful after the cam swap, and it's only the race that doesn't show it? And the $2000... you don't just mean the cam, right?!?

My Guesses:
Cam installed wrong, Lash on rockers not properly set, cam for wrong engine.
Any idling problems? Whats gas mileage? anything else happening besides being slower? what about timing chain? Did you pull the distributor to make sure the teeth werent bent or anything when they put the cam in? BTW... $2000?!?!

1989 Firebird. Modded.
700r4-->t5 w/ram clutch
Cold air, 1.6 rockers, 21lb injectors, 3" y-pipe, random tech cat, 3" ipipe, flowmaster 80 series 3" in 3" out hand made stainless tips, Lakewood LCA's, Msd 6a, Msd coil, Wonder Bar, 180* stat,
First 1500 bucks gets the car..runs great. no problems. needs paint.

Yea check everthing out mentioned above, one of them should be the problem, I doubt you lost because of wheelspin from too much power
