Can't solve my MPG prob......

I think the V6 just sucks(gas) when it comes to driving the overpopulated city streets of Southern California. That, and it just doesn't have enough power/TQ to accelerate 3000 lbs. at a reasonable RPM.
I just went to Vegas and I got an amazing 27.6 MPG yet on the streets I'm consistantly getting 14 MPG....it just doesn't make sense. I thought I had leaky injectors but then how do I explain 27.6 MPG highway???
I drive 95% city so this really blows.

it only gets worse with the 5 speed, cuz then ull try and keep it in high rpm for the power... btw, im getting more like 7 mpg in city.

Hell, I get about 17-19 city with the RS, although I never have gotten as high as 27.6...my best tank ever was 26 I think...

I would look into your O2 sensor, a new converter or just gutting it all together. I would make sure I was fully tuned, I would check the compression in each cylinder, then I would try another tank full…

yea i agree. i was recently troubleshooting a hesitation problem and in the end i ended up replacing my fuel filter, o2 sensor, distributer cap, rotor, and ingnition module. turns out it was a crack spark plug boot, but the point of the story is that once that was all replaced i went from getting a consistent 100-115 miles per tank to 225 consistently. pretty good huh? i am sure the mods helped a but to but, but theres is a list to start with. the distributer is an expensive one, i am sure the 02 sensor will help if you haven't replaced it yet. my gm dealer told me that mine was water logged, along with my ignition module....long story...hehe

I live in an area where there are only a couple of stoplights and drive 14 miles to work . I get about 20 mpg If I take it easy 15 if I romp on it , 25-27 mpg on a long trip.

You are lucky. I only work 7 miles away and I hit about 15 stoplights.

About the O2 sensor....it's new. Plugs, cap, wires, fuel filter, rotor, all new. I havent replaced the ignition module though....hmmmm.

This was at 80 mph the whole way(260 miles). You know what i noticed? At 75 mph the engine is at 2500 rpms, BUT, at 80 mph the engine is at 2550 rpms. You actually get better gas milage at 80 mph then at 75!!

I would go over my MPG calculations if I was getting mileage like that... I get 15 in the city and 21 on the highway and I romp on it all the time... and I have an 8 with a leaky fuel line... if you get 7 MPG then you need a new engine...

My guess is that his bigger injectors are causing probs...but 7 MPG is like Excursion territory.

hmmm....all that stuff is new huh? i mean you have the same engine i do. i'd say what the heck and do the module. just make sure you don't get confused like i did. there are two different things. the ignition coil which is over by the ac compressor, and then ignition module inside the distributer. my coil is the MSD GM blaster coil. its a direct replacement from MSD for 40 bucks. then there is the module, which GM replaced for me with OEM parts. from what i understand there really aren't any aftermarket products for the distributers for our cars. how many miles are on your car....the injectors could be clogged. i have hear getting them cleaned can do a alot for mileage and performance.

Yeah, I just got some junkyard injectors to have them rebuilt for approx. $60-70 (see TomP). The car has 153,000....

my car just got 24.5 mpg on my trip to Chicago, and I have a cam and 3.73's! The catback, headers, pulleys, and intake give you better mpg, so I guess it all balanced out the gears and cam a little bit, otherwise if I had jst gears and cam I; sure my mileage would have sucked. If I still had 3.23's I think I would have gotten 26-27 mpg, but the 3.73's keep my rpms up aorund 2600 around 70 mph.

I;m also assuming my car would have gone 330 miles on a full tank of gas, but it probably could have gone 30-40 more miles if I wanted, but I;m estimating on the conservative side. BTW when my car is empty my tank only holds 13 gallons.

I got 30 on my last couple of 140 mile trips. This is at 2300RPM at 60-65mph. Last time I went to Milwaukee (250miles) I got 30 cruising at 70-75. Mods are below. Not enough mods for me tho.
